Camaro and Firebird Transmission Diagnostic Guide

Materials Needed

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Socket
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Transmission fluid
  • Flashlight

Step 1 – Check transmission's fluid

It could be old or low.

Low or burnt transmission fluid could cause various issues with your tranny. This issue could cause a grinding noise, and it could even prevent your transmission from shifting into gears. If you think you have any type of problem with your tranny, this is the best place to start. Check the transmission's dipstick for fluid condition and level. The fluid should look pink. If your fluid is brown, then it's time to replace it. If your fluid is in a good condition but it's low, top it off, then check the pan on the bottom for any leaks to be sure. The transmission is a sealed unit, and should never burn or consume fluid; if it does and no leaks are present, there is an internal issue with the gearbox.

If your fluid is in a good condition, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 – Check transmission's wiring

They could be worn or cracked.

The transmission's wiring could wear and crack due to weather conditions. If your transmission is acting up, it's a wise thing to check the wires. Use your flashlight to check all the wires connected to the transmission. Then follow the wires to the other side. If you see any worn wires, that could be your culprit. Bad wires could mess with your transmission's signals, which could cause it to get stuck, slip, lag, or not even shift.

If all your transmission's wiring are in a good condition, move on to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check transmission's filter

It could be clogged.

A clogged transmission filter could ruin the smoothness of your tranny. This could cause your tranny to hesitate when shifting. There is a small issue, replacing the transmission's filter is not the easiest process. You have to drop the transmission pan to replace it. You will need to place your drain pan under the front of the transmission pan, remove the front bolts, then let the pan drain. Remove the rear bolts, then drop the pan. The filter will be visible from there, you just need to replace it, then install the pan back, and torque the bolts to nine lbs-ft. Refill the transmission through the transmission's dipstick with the help of a funnel.
