Monster Camaro Lights the Night, Quarter-Mile on Fire

Nitrous-powered 1969 Camaro steps up to the Big Wheel class at California grudge race, handles everything with ease.

Drag racing and Camaros are a match made in gearhead heaven. There isn’t a weekend that goes by without GM’s famed pony car going toe-to-toe on the quarter-mile, taking wins as often as possible.

Such was the case for Roger Holder and his 1969 Camaro, both making an appearance at the second round of Team Boddie Racing’s No Excuses competition at Sacramento Raceway Park in Sacramento, California. YouTube channel 1320video was there to capture the fire-breathing magic surrounding Holden’s Camaro.

“It’s got a Pat Musi nitrous motor in it,” said Holder, “with M&M two-speed tranny in it, and it’s running 275 drag radials. We’re gonna run on Small Tire, but where wasn’t enough cars for us to run, so we just thought we’d could go over and play with the Big Tire guys. We’ll see what happens. I don’t know how well we’ll do, but we’ll try.”

Holder’s Camaro lit up the night sky the previous day during a test-and-tune session, no doubt ready to take on the competitors in the Big Tire class. Another test-and-tune saw the monster pony obliterate a green Chevy S-10 like it wasn’t even there.

Come the first round, the Camaro seemed to lose badly against the turquoise Pontiac GTO in the right lane, but it was the GTO that lost, for it red-lighted off the line. Thus, Holder cruised his bruiser to the other end of the strip into the next round.

This time around, the Camaro went up against a younger, yellower fourth-gen descendant, and handily trounced the car while also shooting out a big ball of flame from its cowl induction.

In the final round for the Camaro, it fell short by a car length against another, this time a 1984 model piloted by street outlaw legend Kye Kelly. But what a show it delivered.

“I don’t know if you guys understand how awesome that car is,” said 1320video host Fred White. “Roger Holder just– his front bumper was on Kye’s back bumper. Kye is a 959 cubic-inch, four or five stages of nitrous, big motor. [Holder] has a nitrous motor as well, but tiny little tires… He did pretty well if you ask me.”
