Camaro SS 1LE Hounds Mustang GT350 and Camaro Z/28 on Track

There’s a whole lotta V8 in this video, with underdog Camaro proving to be formidable.

Headlines of late have ballyhooed the Camaro ZL1 1LE for its on-track capabilities. While they are incredibly capable machines, the main takeaway for that car should actually be the last three characters in the name. Sitting quietly on Chevrolet’s online configurator is the Camaro SS 1LE, and after viewing this video, it might be an overlooked gem.

North Carolina’s Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR) hosts track days for the motorsport minded, and this video point of view comes from the dashboard of an SS 1LE. Other V8 friends find their way out on track with this driver, including a Camaro Z/28, and a Mustang GT350, which are, arguably, two of the more track-focused rides to recently emerge from Detroit. As litmus tests go, this should show just about where the SS 1LE can play.

For the two Camaros, getting by the GT350 was easy work. The Z/28’s LS7 has the edge on power, making 505 in total, while the chase car makes due with 455 from it’s LT1. The SS 1LE’s performance capabilities aren’t too far off that of the Z/28 and are arguable more comparable than that of the ultra-fast ZL1. What it makes for is an entertaining dog fight to watch on track.

Disclaimers are important, and from what we can tell, both the SS and the Z/28 are stock, or very close to it. The SS does ride on sticky Nitto 555 tires, however. With this much power on tap from both cars, driver skill would ultimately be the determining factor for which car would be “faster” but remember on an open track day such as this, no trophies are being awarded, except for grins, smiles and probably a few high-fives. To us, both of them sure look like winners.
