Craigslist Find of the Week: Triple-Black 1991 Chevy Pickup with an LS1

The Sith Lord’s LS1-powered work truck awaits.

How good does this look? We’re not always nuts about pickup trucks. And we know tastes are subjective, but this 1991 Chevy C1500 on CraigsList in Los Angeles looks just…right. With the front faschia extended below the bumper, it resembles the 454SS. Except there’s no 454. Instead, under the hood lurks an LS1 still sporting the plastic “CORVETTE” covers over the heads. Triple-black with a mostly black LS under the hood? Sign us up. This is Darth’s Pickup and it’s wonderful.

The swap includes the dashboard and center console from a Camaro, which suggests a nicely fitted original wiring harness. The seller offers few details about the swap, although the ad notes that this setup is smog-legal. Having that done removes much hassle in dealing with California’s CARB laws and probably justifies a healthy chunk of the $10,000 asking price. A determined buyer could have navigated that process themself, but sometimes we find it nice to pay for convenience.

The transmission is a 4L60E four-speed automatic with a Ford 9-inch rear end that comes with a rear disc brake conversion. The whole chassis has been lowered with a bagged rear setup. That gives a nice, tastefully aggressive look to the whole package. The black five-spoke American Racing wheels fit perfectly with blacked out badges and shaved rear lenses. All of it just works aesthetically, at least to this author.

The shortbed Stepside remains a hallmark of sporty truck modifications. On this generation of trucks, that means a nicely sculpted rear fender with deep steps. Again, the look just works, especially with the single cab. With the LS1 and 4L60E, the seller says the truck will return 20 mpg. So what do you think? Is $10,000 a reasonable amount for an utterly usable, badass-looking truck powered by an engine with a plethora of available bolt-on speed parts?
