Hybrid Tech: Volvo 122 Amazon Meets 600+ hp LS3

Now you don’t see that every day. I mean, the Volvo 122 is a rare anyway. They’re the type of car you’re not likely to see outside of a particularly eclectic Cars and Coffee event, or maybe a Concours’. Certainly you’re not going to them when you got to the drag strip… Or with an LS under the hood.

Yeah. This old Volvo is special.

Under the hood is a 600 horsepower LS3. That alone isn’t amazing—people build high output LSs all day long. What this particular engine has going for it is the incredibly light weight of it’s body. The Volvo only weighs 2600 lbs. That’s including AC, navigation, power windows, and all the creature comforts you could hope for.

So, yes, it’s fit to cruise boulevards and go on leisurely road trips, but no one builds a car with 600 horses to do the speed limit. People don’t put 14 inch Wilwoods on their cars to stop at McDonalds. No, this car is built for the track. Drag strips, road courses… This is one classic Volvo that is not destined for a life sitting on fancy lawns.
