Massive Magnusson 3.1-liter supercharger system promises to deliver huge power gains. Can you and your car handle it?

Many folks are already familiar with the name Magnuson Superchargers. Their supercharger systems have been making more power for our cars for over thirty years. When we say more power, we mean a lot more power. At SEMA360 Magnuson has unveiled their most powerful system ever. In early 2021 this new system is going to be available for several Chevrolet Performance engine applications. There are specific systems for the LT1, LT4, LS7, LS3, LSA and LS9 configurations. Truck owners are not left out either. There will be a kit available for all 2014 and newer GM truck and SUVs.

So how much more power are we talking? How does 3.1 liters sound? That is a full 15 percent more than their current flagship 2650 series. The 2650 can already produce insane power numbers so we can’t wait to see what these new units are capable of. To put a 3.1-liter supercharger into context the supercharger on the almighty 2019 Corvette ZR1 is 2.65 liters. Most car engines today don’t have 3.1-liters of displacement, let alone just a supercharger.

How much power can these units make? There is no formal release yet as to the power figures. However, the 2650 unit on the LT1 is said to be good for a healthy 1,200 horsepower. Will this new system be able to break the 1,500-horsepower barrier? It is possible. Although, what else will it break? Anytime you are going forced induction it is a good idea to beef up the internals. The Magnuson systems are pretty robust units but this 3.1-liter is going to be putting a lot of stress on the motor. Luckily, the LS motors are pretty robust as well.

The LS engines have exceptionally-high flowing cylinder heads and deliver tremendous torque at low-RPM and strong power in the higher-rev range. This is the beauty of the LS, and why it takes so well to forced induction. Combined with tuning, supercharging an LS-powered vehicle is a highly effective method of generating a dramatic increase in power. General Motors itself does it on the LS9 and LSA engines to great effect. These new Magnuson units will just turn things up to eleven. Hell, they might even turn things up to twelve given the size of them.

Other things to consider? Cost. No formal price was announced at SEMA360 but quality units like these are not cheap. Some of their current top end systems run over $8,000 today. It is reasonable to think that the new 3100 series blowers are going to be pushing $10,000. That is not exactly cheap, however, these are not exactly insignificant gains either. If you want this type of power from a stock car you will need to stop by your local Bugatti dealer. Ten grand there won’t even cover your first oil change, so the Magnuson kit is a bargain. At least, that is what we suggest you tell your significant other.

We were excited to hear about the release of these new monster supercharger systems and are anxious to get even more details. We are even more anxious to see these babies getting installed and seeing what type of power they are really putting down. That should be here soon enough. Thankfully 2020 is almost over and Magnuson just gave us one more reason to be excited about 2021.
