Default So...how long before I'm in the 12's?

Went to the track for the first time last night. Mods are in sig. The car put down 333hp/339tq. I ran a best of 13.481@107.62. My highest trap was 108.35. I was only launching at 1500 rpm on street tires. My 13.4 run was with a 2.238 60 foot. Tire pressure was at 28psi. Next time I hit the track, I will be taking the tires down to 20 psi and try riding the clutch out a little longer. I'm pretty sure the car has 12's in it, just what do I need to do other than become a better driver. Any simple mods that would get me closer to the 12's without breaking the bank? I was thinking of going to a 3.73 rear, but I don't know how much of an improvement that would be since I have 3.42's now and i want to stay away from 4.10s.

I can commiserate with you. My bf and I took my car to the track tonight and ran a best of 13.008 @ 108.00!! Just 9 thousandths less and that would have been a 12.999, haha. I wish I had more advice for you, but I'd just practice and really work on your launches. As zach ws6 said you have to get those 60' times better. Your trap speed is definitely good for high 12s so the car has it in it. Would you consider drag radials? I think I'll bolt up my bf's next time around, but I'm not too worried about my 10 bolt since I'm not dumping a clutch and I have an extra one sitting around.

Get a cam. That is always a good start after your average bolt ons. I cam will easily put you in the 12's slightly costly if you dont do it yourself ,tons of cams out there . Gears are great. With the 6 speed you could probably go with 4:10s but 3:73's are great. Nothing beats a good gear. And no question more grip will help you get better times. I have a cam and bolt ons no gears. I ran a 12.5 with ok tires. Tight budget go with gears and slicks.

The motors got 176K miles on it so I don't really want to cam it because of the bottom end. I have only made 3 passes down the track with the car(all on Thursday night) and I have found atleast two things I can correct the next time I go out. For one, I found out that the track I was at really wasn't letting us run in the groove. They had cones at the start line setting us out about 2 feet closer to the wall. I think next time I go I'm going to stage on a small angle so when I launch the car pulls towards the center of the track and I get the most VHT I can get. Also, the tires had way too much pressure in them. I'm really not afraid of breaking the rear because another 10 bolt can be had for less than $400(no sense of putting a 9inch or 12 bolt in a car that no matter what I do is going to have 180K on the chassis). I was thinking cam down the road but I know the car is making the power now to get into the 12s and if I go cam I will be wanting a cam that's worthy of getting me high 11's.

See the problem with getting good times with launching is the fragile rearend like you said. You may as well build a rearend that wont break instead of buying one after another. You do have a lot of miles. A rebuild could be considered before a cam but I think you could get away with it easily. These motors are awesome. If your dragging the car with that many miles on it already you could be asking for trouble. Id do what you said about the grooves and tires but were talking it might do some. I have pretty much what you have but a cam not even a big one. Not sure on the lift , it was in the car when I bought it. Well either way good luck to you. You will get it easily. You have an ls1.

lol, I agree with you on the Ls1>Lt1. My dad was an ASC "B" tech up until last year when he retired so I have tons of tools and knowledge to pretty much do whatever I want. This winter I was thinking about dropping a motor in from a wrecked car with lower miles and throwing a cam in it at the same time, but before I go spending 2 grand I wanna see what this set up can get outta the car. I plan on going to the track sometime next week and will post up what my results are.

Get some DR's and drive it like you stole it. I have less than 1 grand in mods and have run consistant mid 12's and my Dyno #'s are only slightly higher than yours 342hp, 350tq. The clutch will usually slip before the rear goes.

Well I went back to the track tonight and got 5 passed in a matter of 3 hours(gotta love Atco!!) Break down of passesE.T. MPH 60')
13.69@108.2 2.39(first time slipping clutch)
13.28@109.05 2.28
13.21@109.53 2.188
13.22@109.56 2.223
13.03@109.78 2.118

As the night went on, I got more practice slipping the clutch and my last run I launched at 3500. Next time out I will try launching at 4 and pray for to the 10 bolt gods. I could use a new one anyway since the stock one is approaching 180k.So I'm almost part of the 12 second club. Next time out I will be!!!!

I am 99% sure it has to do with your launch and shifting. That car should easily run 12.90's. Keep working at it man

I'm 100% sure it has it in to run easily 12.80's. This was only my second time to the track with the car and I am a new driver and as everyday track pass goes by I get a little better driving stick. I've only had my license for 3 months(only 17). I have a total of 11 passes under my belt and every single pass the car has gone quicker or about the same as the run before) and I have trapted a little higher with each run so it shows I am getting the hang of running through the gears. I need to get the 60' down do atleast a 2.00 and I believe the car will run 12.80s. Atco is open until mid december and with that air I wouldn't doubt if I got a mid 12 outta the car before the end of the year.
