Default Newbie Needs An Oil Question Answered!

First off..Hi! It's great to be here. I have heard much discussion on using Castrol 0w-30 in the LS1. I live in Chicago, and was wondering if this is a decent oil to run? I have M1 5-30 in it now, but wouldn't mind trying the 0-30. Thanks for the help!

i used Mobil 1 5W-30 til 75,000 miles then switched to Mobil 1 10W-30..thats all i know..i switched to 10 so it'd be a little thicker since it was high mileage.

The car is an 04 GTO with low mileage if that helps...I have heard 10-30, but also more people using 0-30...

I live just outside of Toronto Ontario, so our weather is virtually the same as Chicago and I've had great oil analysis results running Castrol 0w30 in a few different vehicles over the last few years. Castrol 0w30 is definitely a better built oil then Mobil 1 5w30.

Nope, the older American made Syntec is not even close to the same quality as the German stuff. The older American stuff is a much thinner oil, it's almost a 0w20, while the German stuff is almost a 0w40.

This is kinda off topic but i was also curious as to what would be the best oil for my car. I've got a C5. The dealership said to only use Mobil 1 in it. Thats fine with me but what weight. I live in San Diego too btw so it doesn't exactly get cold here. Thanx

I run Havoline Synthetic 5W-30. I have been a Havoline user for awhile now. I used to use Pennzoil and Castrol until I discovered this...

The pit crew for a local amatuer racer tried every oil brand they could find and Havoline produced the least wear on the engine of any they used.

After I discovered this I switched and have been happy with it ever since.

Not saying the other brands aren't fine oils (As long as you avoid Quaker State and Valvoline which contain paraffin), but I think I will stick with Havoline until I hear convincing argument to the contrary.

Do you still have those American made bottles? I'm wondering if it's the old US made stuff, or if it is the newest stuff? Because supposedly there is some new US made stuff which is the same as the German stuff. When you poured the bottles in, was the oil green in the US made bottles? If so, it's the same formula as the German stuff. If it wasn't green, it's the older stuff. I wouldn't drain it right away if it were the older stuff though, just run a shorter interval so you can get the good stuff in sooner.

Has it actually been confirmed that the new stuff made in America is the same, or is it still just a rumor?

At this point in time it's still a rumor, until someone sends some in for analysis. But it's a pretty good chance it's the same since the newest American made stuff still passes all the same tests that the green German made stuff does. They wouldn't be able to do that with the older formula they used before.

So far only a couple of people have spotted this new American made "green" Syntec though.

I just stocked up last week on 12 quarts of the German stuff, but right behind it on the shelf was the American stuff and it did pass all the same tests (Porsche, BMW, etc.) I wonder if it was the new "green" stuff?

You can get one from Blackstone labs for $20.

If the US stuff you got was green, it's the right stuff! Does the back of the bottle list Porsche Approved, BMW longlife, ACEA A3, and a bunch of MB and VW specs? If so, that stuff should be the same formula.
