Need help identifying my LS1
1 represents GM division 1= chevy 2= pontiac
W represents model year in my case 98
2 represents assembly plant in my case St. Therese
The last six digests represent plant sequence
From this I was able to tell my was a chevy.....98 model year....built in st therese( all f bodies are).... And the last six digests of my actual vin are 132624
Vin derivative pos. Equivalent actual vin pos
1 3
2 10
3 11
4-9 12-17
So you start inserting these
X X 2 X X X X X X W 2 132624
Now to Finnish it up
The first digit of the vin represent country of origin 1= US
The second represent manufacture g = GM
The third represents division 1=chevy
The fourth and fifth represent car line yy= corvette fp = camaro
The six body type 2= hatch back 3 = convertible
The seventh restraint system 2= air bag and manual belts
The eighth engine g= LS1 I don't know the letter for LS6
The ninth is a check digit I used 0 and it worked for me
The tenth is model year v= 97 w=98 x=99 z= 2000 I don't know what they did after that
The eleventh is assembly plant from the derivative we know that is st therese in my case
The twelfth through seventeenth is plant sequence from the vin derivative we know that is 132624
1G1FP (just have to guess at this one I guessed 2 hatch back) 2G( I guessed 0 and it worked) W2132624
2G1FP22G0W2132624
I ran a car facts on this and it came up as a z28 camaro
Then I went into the dealer and had them run the vin to see what warranty work had been done
Hope this helps good luck
I used it to decode a 2000 Firebird LS1
This motor had a block casting number of 12559378, so that number was used before 2001.
Thanks for your help
Pat

Obviously they have changed the system a bit.
Is there a way to figure out what the newer stuff is exactly? year? make? size? etc...
I have 2 engines I would like to identify. The numbers I have are nothing at all close to the examples I am finding.
These numbers are lazer etched/stamped on block, drivers side. cylinder head deck surface where transmission bolts. Above oil filter.
1st number C7G508093
2nd number T36199444
My understanding is. 4 of these numbers match the actual vehicle engine was in.
Is there a way to find the actual VIN with these few numbers as a starting point?
I do not have the ECMs. Just engines.
Thanks for looking
Darrell
