Default Guys will new Yank Converters

Do you still have that lock, unlock bullshit when you are cruising at hwy speed? I thought Yank would have addressed this after the ST series. I have 25 miles on my new trans and SS 4000 converter & It locks & unlocks..I hate to say it, but my Vigilante never did this..your thoughts

The problem isn't in the converter, its in the transmission.

Mine Locks and Unlocks ocassionally at highway speeds. It seems worse when im going up a hill after all flat road driving.

My Converter wasn't new but had extremely low miles. I would also like to hear more about what causes this and a possible fix.

Before you blame the converter , hook up a tuner or scanner and see whats being commanded , converters cant lock and unlock by themselves , they can slip but if it locking and unlocking there must be something pulsing the lockup converter off and on ,
watching the data on a scanner would verify this , It most likley will need to be dealt with on the tuner ,

These 4L60e's are to damn tempermental, sorta like a woman I am not an expert at this tuning stuff but isn't the computer tuned & not the trans? I had my car dyno tuned with the Vig 3800, I thought it would be comparable with what I have now...

tune it....don't balme the converter,,,,more than likely a tuning issue or trans issue.

I guess having 2 Yank converters that lock & unlock is just by chance? Guess it is a coincidence then since the Vig didn't do it...I will see if someone can scan my computer

Like i was saying the transmission can only do what its told , they have no internal programing nothing , the pcm which is, what is tuned tells them every move to make , without it would be like someone walking around with there head chopped off ,Wouldnt work well and not to long either ,LOL
Read the data on a scanner ,

Thanks Performa, 1 more ? Could it be fixed without me spending another $500 on a dyno tune or can someone that knows what they are doing program it to lock?

Well first you need to verify that the pcm is indeed comanding it to lock and unlock any decent tranny shop should be able to help you , And though Im not overly familiar with the tuners out there, the handhelds tuners should be able to vary lockup points at various speeds and the sensitivty to throttle motion which is probably where your issue will be ,

Another Dyno tune isn't what you want here. You need a REAL tune that address your transmission, on the road.

You know, I just remembered that my tuner couldn't get the converter to stay locked up on the dyno after I had a ported throttle body installed (wanted to make sure that A/F was still okay) about a month ago. My Yank SS3200 was installed last Spring. I ran it all summer and have never had a problem on the road. The tuner is good so I don't know what that was all about. He had done the original tune, when I had all the engine mods installed, with the stock converter, and it locked up fine on the dyno. The car put down 366 rwhp and 365 rwtorque, unlocked. I called Yank and they told me that locked, on a tight converter, the numbers would be about 20-30 more. As I mentioned, it's never done anything weird on the street and locks and stays locked just fine until called upon.

More than likely your misfire tables are causing the lock/unlock issues. Even if there are not enogh to set the SES light it will still lock/inlock the converter. Have a tuner soften you misfire tables and I bet it goes away..

Sounds Like it could be a failed converter lock up valve. The bore are known for wearing out and the converter will pop in and out of lock up regardless of what the PCM is commanding. Could also just be a tunning issue.
