This question is about an SBC. But, since this is more of a general engine technical question, I thought it would be appropriate to post it here, too.

That number will change depending on the head gasket type you end up using.

If I recall, steel gaskets recommed not more than 0.006" variance. I would
think that value accounts for both mating surfaces (head and block).

Just out of interest, I measured my block to <0.002" and heads were 0.002" -0.003".

Yea that or one of those real expensive flat block things and a feeler gauge.

I was thinking of trying plate glass. I bought a steel ruler, but it is insufficient(its not precision).
