Today's under hood progress

Instead of running a new thread on every thing I will edit this one as I go along.

Been sitting here trying to think of other crap to do to the ol' Camaro. Came up with this one. I am painting all the rusted GM shit under my car such as A arms and all other rusted suspension components.

Here are some crappy pics of today's goodness. I wire brushed off all the rust then painted everything rusted with Rustoleum oil based paint. So far I got the passenger's side done. Next will be the under side of the car.

Looks pretty damn good to me, and no more crusties falling on my face while I am doing a oil change.

Well, I am broke. But, I still wanted to do something to my car, I have not worked on it for almost six months (except oil changes).

I decided to relocate all the possible crap I can such as the TCS, hood latch cable, passenger's side harness, amp wire, and even the POS air system hose.

I want to get rid of my pile of GM shit AIR system, but I really dont want to see the SES light and I have very close to no money, so tuning it out is out of the question at this time.

I also decide to get thicker gauge battery cables. I seen a few posts on here about this and it seems pretty straight forward untill I got to the starter wire and the block side ground. What the hell, that shit is damn near impossible to get to.

Now I need to know what kind of wire and connectors to use. I really want to get this done right the first time. What specific wire and connectors do you all use for this? I already removed all the old caroded crap. Actually it was not in that bad of shape, just crappy.

I have all the possible tools you can think of. Just no money for cool mods.

Oh well, things will get back to normal some day.

looks great

Red 01SS Oct 17, 2008 08:47 PM

Very nice, most of that is still on my "list"

super clean!! i must need new contacts though...i never noticed the hood latch release cable before! wtf!! what hole diameter did you go with for the wire mod?

95TAJade Oct 17, 2008 09:17 PM

oh yeah...and where did you relocate your TCS stuff too? did you remount it or just secure it so it won't move? I'd love to do those things to my car

Swiat34 Oct 17, 2008 09:46 PM

It's lookin better under there! Push the wires by the ECM back to get em out of view.
Here's an idea to save some money on the EGR and AIR deletes. Instead of buying block off plates, pry/cut the tubes off the factory plates and have a friend (or yourself) weld up the holes and then grind it all flat...mine work perfectly and a gasket set at Oreily's was like $15. $15 isn't much, but if you REALLY want to save that, make sure you keep the old gaskets in good shape when you take the stuff off. Then use JB Weld putty (stuff you kneed together) to fill in the hole in the intake.

If you have any spraypaint sitting around, you could paint your coil packs and brackets at no cost!

haha, ive beeh there before, last time i collapsed a lung, i was just polishing all of the stuff under the hood i could. I wasnt working, so no inome to do anything, at least you can drive it though, i couldnt...

good job though! it looks alot cleaner, should have come that way from the factory

samson_420 Oct 17, 2008 11:43 PM

Well, this was kind of a mach up. I just finished it now. I fucked up and cut a hole in the wrong spot, then I cut on in a good spot. The hole is about 2" by 1". I filled the spare hole with JB Weld and will paint it later.

I just polished the lights, they look like ass in some shots.

Now, what can I use for the wire raplacement?

02BLACKTAWS6 Oct 18, 2008 12:39 AM

WOW! looks super clean

samson_420 Oct 18, 2008 02:33 AM

Well, I decided to keep the stock cables. They seem to be in decent shape with no internal corrosion. I took the connectors off then soldered them back on.

This was a pain in the ass, I guess it was worth it. It cost me nothing but time and some scrapes all over my arms.

Thank you all for the good comments!

Hood latch cable? IDK what that is. Before pics?

samson_420 Oct 18, 2008 09:35 PM

The thing that pops the hood. . .No before pics, sorry.

Today I got a new connector for the battery. Started it up, the voltage jumped up almost 2 volts. Cool. . . . . . . .

Next up is going to be painting the a arms and painting all the rusted suspension components. I am also going to clean down the rest of the under side of the engine.

it's the one cable that runs on the drivers side. theres a small hole next to where it runs through the firewall that you just drill out to be a tad bigger. and run it through the hole, under the fender instead of on top.

looks good OP!

Looks great!

I was in that position in the spring. Looking back, they were the best first mods to do.

If you can afford paint, I'd suggest painting your coil packs, and front bumper support...if you can splurge on the paint - I don't know your budget :D

Good work man!

samson_420 Oct 19, 2008 07:57 PM

I like the bumper support. I thought about it, but I think it would look worse than the way it looks now.

Updated. . . . . . . . . . .

navyblueSS Oct 20, 2008 11:46 AM

Looks good, very clean.

twitchtwice Oct 20, 2008 12:07 PM

another thing you could do is paint your calipers/brackets, i did it yesterday and wow what a difference it makes. makes the wheels look that much better when the calipers/brackets are color matched with the car.
