Re: After market hood weight savings.
pin on weighs 12 pounds shipped with the box LOL
The bolt on weighs about 18 but you need the special shocks for it.
Quite a signicant weight savings for $250 for the stock appearance pin on hood. (approx 32 pound savings)
Cheers,
Chris

Re: After market hood weight savings.
I ordered the 2" Bolt-on Cowl Hood from VNF...
I am looking for at least 15 lbs lighter. I needed a new hood anyways, so it was a win-win situation...

After market hood weight savings.
Hey y'all. Has anyone weighed an aftermarket hood and compared it to the weight saving of a stock hood?
Any results you want to post?
How much weight to the fiber glass hood does the cowl add?
Hood brackets weight how much?
Thanks for the info!

I've weighed my VFN 2" cowl hood (pin-on hood). It comes in right ar 13lbs. I haven't weighed the stock hood or any of its hardware yet.

Thanks everybody.
About those pin on hoods. Are they a pretty big pain in the A$$?
Y'all who have them wish you had gotten the bolt on instead?

Man, if the Pontiac hood didn't look so ugly then I would put on my car. Now if VFN would make a lightweight pin-on hood that looked like the SLP Ram Air H.O hood then I would be all over that.

Re: After market hood weight savings.
As far as being a PITA, well, my car is sitting up on jackstands with no drivetrain right now... The hood arrived after my fire/engine death. I haven't even started to install the fasteners yet. I don't think I'd want a lift-off hood on a car that I drove on a daily basis, though. Although I can handle it alone, it is somewhat cumbersome and obviously bulky... A good compromise for a frequently driven car would be a hood that still utilized hinges, but no latch, hood struts, etc...
PSJ, it doesn't come predrilled for anything. You can use conventional pins (what I'm going to do), dzus fasteners, etc... It looks like it will be easy to install 4 pins, but 6 are the recommended number. I don't know that I'll be able to pull that one off. I've heard from numerous folks that the dzus fasteners are not a great idea on our cars. I don't remember all the specifics, but I think it had something to do with the lack of a secure mounting point for them...

Re: After market hood weight savings.
I would like to see some pics of the VFN pin-on hood on a Firebird if anyone has any. I guess a camaro would work too. I'm thinking about a VFN pin-on hood for my Formula.

Where would be the best mounting point for the fasteners?
Oh and come on guys...I need some pics with hoods mounted on the car.

john, you can check my hood out if you like, its not that big of a deal, i have no problem picking it up by myself and handling it except for windy days like today. then you might want another person around.

Re: After market hood weight savings.
You would want six fasteners or you risk the hood blowing off 3/4's of the way down the track. The bolt on is 18 pounds I believe.

Re: After market hood weight savings.
Next year I am planning on doing the bolt on hood (28 pounds), K Member/A-Arms (40 pounds), man rack (25), front Bumper Support and foglights (24) and dynabatt (18)
135 pounds off the front should help a LOT with weight transfer and traction.
If I had the cash I would do it all now LOL!
Cheers,
Chris

Re: After market hood weight savings.
My VFN hood has been installed with dzus (sp?) fastners. The shop doing the install recommended that over the hood pins. They were concerned that the two small scoops allowing air up under the front of the pontiac would be enough to make the hood fly apart on the topside with just a few hoodpins. Believe me they weren't exstatic about doing it.... George is correct...mounting points are non existant for the fastners. I'll post pics when the paint is done.

Re: After market hood weight savings.
I'm in the process of painting mine right now, but am delayed from the chilly wet weather that just rolled in here... When I get it all done, I'll post some pics.
I think I've also figured out how/where to mount four more pins, for a total of eight (two on the front, two on the rear, and two on each side).
