The best thing to do is get a set of clear light covers. Then paint the back of the covers so the paint doesn't get chipped up.

I have seen painted camaro headlights. I was told to use a "hot knife" or a heat gun and a razor blade and heat the glue with the gun as you cut the glue. I don't know what paint to use b/c of the heat. But use acid base primer on the crome plated plastic. I have had one of my lenses apart it is easy but take you time.
