I need to get my alternator casing polished. Anyone done this? Who, what, where...

I would maybe paint it if getting it apart myself is easy enough. Any tricks to this?

Hear I am!

I polished mine and left it together during the process. Since it is really hidden on my car I did not sand & smooth just shined the crap out of it. I did sand and smooth the brackets, why, Just had to.

Todd posted a picture. Mine is off of the brackets which I had powdercoated. I'd just like the aluminum casing for the alternator smoothed a bit and polished. How do you do it? Do you take it apart?

Mark get a hold of Steve. He had his chromed and I think they rebuilt it for about $80 (if I remember right).

Yea, I thought about that but I have nothing else chrome on the car. My billet or other aluminum parts are all going to be polished.

I dont have much chrome either.. just a few bits here and there, i went with chrome because it will be easy to maintain. I could also get it silver powder coated.. that would look very cool in your engine bay..

I have 98 Vette and am having Sean do all my work on the cosmetics and performance of my motor. I am out of Kansas City, Ks and am shipping all my parts to Sean to have him to the work for me because he is that good. He he painted and ported my LS6 intake to match my heads. He is doing my throttle body and all my other parts that I want polished. Not only is his work superior to all others that I have encountered, he is very knowledgable, trustworthy, and precise. He took 7 total days to do my TB that included 5 days of shipping to and from his place. By far the best guy I have ever dealt with. I never have a problem recommending someone as good as Sean to anyone because if someone impresses me then his work is quality and deserving of attention because I am such an ******* when it comes to my money you know? Mark-
I had my Hi-Amp alt powdercoated with the 'almost chrome' paint. I have $2K+ invested in chrome on my TA but decided not to polish or chrome the alt due to the cost and the fact that you can barely see it when installed.

I know, you say, why would I worry about cost if I spent all that $$ so far? Well, I don't mind spending it if it is even remotely seen when the hood is up - I just couldn't bring myself to spend it on something that you have to crawl in the engine bay to even glimpse.

The powdercoat I got looked very nice and if you look REAL hard you can see a hint of the 'shiny'

But you can see it on my 69 Camaro

Oh Mark, I can also get the Starter chromed or powdered (i chromed mine and jet hot coated the heat shields)

Wow, so many options now.... I already polished the round sleeves on the starter, clearcoated them and painted the rest of the bits. The alternator will be visible in my car so I want it polished to match my A/C compressor, fuel rails and TB. Thanks all. Let me ponder my choices.

When items like that are polished, whether it be alternators, waters pumps, etc... how long will that shine last?

I would recommend getting it Clear Powdercoated after it is polished - due to the low position of the alt. in our cars, it sees a lot of abuse from the elements and the polish will degrade faster. The clear powdercoat will protect the shine forever.

Yup! Actually you could have it Clear Anodixed also - but the powdercoating is more readlily available.

Also, some people have been polishing their alt. while it is still assembled - if you are going this route - you won't be able to powdercoat - the cure temps are above 400 deg. - might damage internal components plus the powdered paint will adhere to everything that is metal.

Best way to do it is to dis-assemble the alt. and work on the case alone

UPDATE: I ended up painting it since it's really not too visible. I didn't even take it apart! I very carefully inserted gauze into all the little openings and taped off a few parts... Painted it with Duplicolor engine enamel & clearcoat and now it looks like it was powdercoated. DONE!
