Default Keep my pitted oem windshield or get a Chinese one?

My car is going into the body shop to get all the imperfections fixed. I am contemplating changing the windshield because in the sun it looks sandblasted but it's not cracked. OEM windshields are not available anymore and I have heard the Chinese ones are not nearly as good.
I would like to see out of a clear windshield but I don't want to spend 400 bucks and say that was a mistake. Should I do it?

$400 for aftermarket glass is insane. You should be able to get it replaced for $125-200. I have a buddy that does glass he did mine for $50 including trim

I'm not sure if location plays a factor but Safelite is 310 plus tax & disposal fee. I'm sure I can save a few bucks but the question is should I replace it with an aftermarket glass?

My rear glass leaked bad. Called Safelite and the guy said you have to replace the rear glass also and it will be $800 something. I said the glass if fine, but he said it has to be changed. Had another company come and pull it clean it up. Then put on a new trim and seal it for $135. Call anyone else and get a price.

That's around the number for my neck of the woods. Does it look clear or is it wavy like the ocean?

The glass looked okay to me but it may be susceptible to cracking easier but it could have been the result of my carelessness. The installation guy could not remove the windshield wiper arm on the drivers side and managed to work his way around it somehow. We replaced the plastics on my son's car and it took some prying but I got the driver side wiper arm off but when putting the new plastic part on the car I was applying to much pressure near the corner of the windshield on the passenger side and ended up breaking the glass. Cracks are running across the windshield now and I owe him a new windshield. Right now engine parts are what we're after.

I'm considering the same thing, Although my windshield isnt cracked, I want a new one for crystal clear viewing and a flawless car.

I called safelight and they were about $125, but like said above...I'm not sure about the manufacture of these, She told me that this is the exact same windshield GM would use.

I have yet to give the ok. Im still on the fence,.

$125 sounds light. Just my opinion, the woman you spoke with was reading from a script or on something. If you can get that deal do it but she is mistaken.

This may be the exact same glass that GM would use now, if you had a dealer replace it, but it's not quite the same as what would have come on the car originally (as the OP mentioned, the originals are discontinued.)

Here's a great thread that outlines a ton of detail on the topic:

Lots of great info/research done by zfastss in the above link.

I went to the dealer for an a/c hose a couple years ago purposely to get an OEM part, he put the part on the counter and the first thing I saw was "made in China ".... I asked the parts guy if it was a joke, I would have just gone to any other parts store for that ****!

Safelite is what I used on my old 98 when I replaced the windshield on it in 2008. It was perfectly fine, and cost around $200. That was 10 years ago though, no idea pricing nowadays.

Default Weird

I posted a reply yesterday about Pilkington Classics. I have used their glass on a 66 Nova and a 67 Camaro. They were awesome to work with. Front and rear was around $300 total. For a little more, they will put the original factory logos for LOF and all the numbers and stuff if your doing a total original restoration,..
I guess the admin thought it was a vendor ad, cause they removed my post.
Here is the info.

I called them, the part number to our vehicles is superseded by a Chinese name and part number.

Don't know about part numbers, of original glass, but what I can tell you is the it is WAY better that what Safelite calls a windshield. Very nice piece, with no distortion anywhere that I could find. I bought a Safelite windshield way back when, the edges were so ragged it stress cracked within a few days and their response was OH wow, sorry about that. We can sell you another one.
When I was looking for a 66 Nova windshield I called them, because their website was all over everywhere, but they didn't have 66 Nova glass.
I have been very happy with Pilkington quality, price, and customer service.
