Hood liner necessary?

I'm thinking about ditching the hood liner. Will the paint be ok without it? I just want to make sure before I do it. Thanks.

Should be fine, I can't recall seeing one with a hood liner in person.

I have a 5th. gen. I can't remember if any of my 4th. gens. had one or not now that you mentioned.

hood liner does two things.. muffles the underhood noise a bit and also acts as a fire smothering blanket should the engine catch on fire..

My 02 WS6 has never had a liner, paint is in great shape.

Hood insulator was standard on all base model LS1 4th gens through the 1999 model year (NOT present on SS/WS6 cars though). Starting in 2000, it was omitted from all 4th gens regardless of trim level.
