Do I need lower tension hood springs with a fiberglass hood?

Depends on where you get the hood from. American Sports Car Design makes great quality hoods. I had one from them on my old TA with the factory struts and all, for about 6 years with no problems at all. Now, if you make the mistake of buying something from Mecham, even with no struts you still get cracks, dimples, and pitmarks all over. Why look, there's my Mecham hood below...

You will need to remove one of the struts and go to a parts store. They can then measure the strengh and will also measure the lenth you need to fiquer from there. With the hoods we manufacture you DO NOT need to do this, this is to help the person above with his problem . Rex

Those are some nasty cracks.

Too strong of a shock will do that? Wow!

No, too shitty of a product will do that. Mecham sucks the big one. All the cracks on the side of my hood are not from hood struts, just from absolutely nothing. Where the hood struts meet underneath I have x marks and dimples on the top side of the hood. Total junk.

are you guys sure the person with the mecham hood didn't just get a crappy paint job? or is that something that happens to everyone with that hood? I was asking about the lower tension because I thought the fibergrlass hood would want to come soaring off when you open it becuase it weighs about 1/2 as much as the steel hood.

Yes, I'm positive I got a good paint job on the hood. I had some other parts of the car painted at the same time, and everything else came out just fine. The guys that did the paint called me the day they put primer on the hood and saw how shitty it was. And to top it off, the hood was painted and some cracks appeared the next day! It was then repainted again. No prblems until a few weeks later, when some more cracks showed up. They have been showing up over the last 2 years that I have had the hood. Just the other day I found another x mark by the nose area. I never had any problems using factory struts with my old ASCD Big Block hood on my 96 TA.

Mecham will fix problems with the hood if you ship it to him...meaning you pay for the shipping. I had a mecham hood on my TA for almost 3 years without a single problem like any that I have read on this site. I used the stock hood springs during this time with no problems...although I'll recommend getting lower tension springs. The hood was never slammed and any time I took it in for (insert service here) I was with the car to make sure the hood was handled properly. Great hood IMHO.

Mecham has no concern for his customers(more like suckers). Yeah, he'll fix the hood IF you send it him. That's about $100-$125 to get it to him and another $100-$125 to get it back. So that's another $250 you're out on top of the money you already spent to get it the first time. And what happens if it gets damaged during shipping, now that it is painted and supposedly defect free?

I have a SLP hood and no cracks here. It's about 3 years old too.
