How many sqft of mat is needed for sound deadening?
Did a search but no one said specifically, how much sound deadening material is needed to cover the entire bottom of the car (from hatch to firewall) and the doors?
Is double layering worth it?
What's the most cost efficient deadening material?

IMO, 80 sq.ft., another 10 if you have a hard top.
90 sq.ft. is with only double layering the roof and inner door skins.
Did you plan on puting any up on the dash up under the dash pad?
Double layer the doors, and roof if you have a hardtop plus put a 1-2 lbs of polyfil up in roof center channel.

I put 140 sq. ft. on the floor/firewall/b-pillars/trunk/etc. and 10 sq. ft. on each door.
Areas that were prone to road noise received three layers.
My coverage looks exactly like WhiteRhino's.
Then I put 40 sq. ft. worth of AC insulation foam over the deadener.
I was impressed by the results.
My car has a cutout and it's extremely muffled with the windows up.

My buddy is going to be ordering the material for me and I was wondering if there are any brands other than dynamat that will get the job done as well or close to it. He said something about a brand called Fat Mat that is quite a bit cheaper in price. Anyone know anything about the quality of Fat Mat?

There's lots of other brands. I just don't have any experience with them. I'm sure fatmat or something similiar would be fine. I get Dynamat online. You can get 2 trunk kits for less than a bulk pack and still have one extra piece. It's around $140 shipped. I just know Dynamat does what it says.
It's not in the pics, but I also did under the rear deck, under headliner, and under the car in the tranny tunnel. Still need to do front pillars. A couple of spots in the engine compartment. Then touch up some areas in the back. I guess I do, or will have closer to 150+ sqft when it's done. Other than the wieght, it's one of the best upgrades i've done.

This a very useful site:

A lot depends on your price range, what you're intentions are and what you're willing to deal with.
My decision was to stick with butyl and to spend a few bucks so I used SecondSkin's products (Damplifier and Damplifier Pro) for my install.
