Question about 4.10's

Doing my buddies car up this week....thinking about throwing my spare set of 4.10's in the car....stock motor and stall, 27" tire for the 4.10's (6200 rpm redline), car has bolt ons now going 110 mph in the 1/4 with stock 3.23's and a 26" tire. The car will be runnig a shot through it soon. What do you A4 guys think?

Mean87SS Mar 3, 2009 12:36 AM

Really going to be to much gear...at 1200' he should be redline.

99BlackTransAm Mar 3, 2009 08:40 AM

with the 4:10s he may lose some trap speed but get a better 60'' with some DR's and run a faster time.... I got .5 at the 1/4 with just 4:10s and bolt ons.. with a 6500 redline.. But he he is going to spray it i wuld go 3:73s.. but thats just my .02s

Zero4488 Mar 3, 2009 11:23 AM

I already did my research....the car now mph's 110. With the 410's the 27" tire and the same 6200 redline the car can reach a top mph in 3rd of 121. I highly doubt the car will pick up 11mph on a shot.

BTW...this is what I used to figure out the gearing....

i put 4.10s in my car from 273 it felt good from start but i ran out of rpm at the 1000 ft i was on the limiter...my car is stock with a 3000 stall I was well into 6800 rpms at the 1000 ft....with spray i would have been out well before that...I ran 13.1at 103 with 273s and 3000 stall ran 13.1 at 104 with the 4.10s my short times were a little better but I was pout of rpm at the 1000ft mark..when i went to 342s i hit 12.8 at 105 hope this helps

You ran out of gear with a 6800 redline? Your top speed was what exactly? In theory with a 6200 redline your top speed with 4.10's and your final drive being 1.0:1 you should be able to run up to 117mph in 3rd....i mean with a 6800 redline with a 26" tire your top speed in 3rd would 128 with 4.10's....please explain what I'm missing in this equation....

Predator T/A Mar 3, 2009 09:28 PM

you need to take in the converter slip also...just wasnt a good combo for me...rechecked limiter was set at 6500 btw but I was on it at the 1000 mark and crossed the line on the limiter

Predator T/A Mar 3, 2009 09:32 PM

and city driving i would be in4th gear by 40mph lol and at 75 mph I was well around the 3500rpm range

Zero4488 Mar 3, 2009 10:03 PM

The car in question isn't hitting that high of a MPH....

LS1nut377 Mar 5, 2009 01:26 AM

uhhh i dont think i would 4:10's are just alittle to much gear, and not enough in the tranny to make up for it.

Red96TA Mar 5, 2009 01:51 AM

the rpm ranges on fbodygear.com are not for WOT. For instance, I can hit the throttle from a dead stop, and be at 5000 rpm instantly, but go from 0-60 mph staying at that same rpm due to my stall. And, if this guy plans on driving on the highway more than once a week, dont even consider it. 3k at 80 with 275-35-18s (whatever that comes out to inch wise). Talk about MPG going down the drain.

IMHO, too much gear for a street driven auto. Especially a bolt on car with a small shot. 3.23's are a decent gear, just put a stall in it and leave the 10 bolt alone till it dies.

Car will be a 1/4 foot in the floor type of car....not really a go to the store type deal.....

Well you don't gain much with the gearing alone in a bolt on car and if you're gonna build a 1/4 mile car the 10 bolt shouldn't be a part to invest in. I drive my car on the weekends and it has 3.91's, Personally it's pretty aggressive on the highway I now get shitty mileage. In fact at the track I gained nothing, but I did go from a 10 bolt to a 12.

Some may disagree with me, but I ran some 3.42's in my A4 and love em' more. Put a nice stall in the car and you'll chop off half a second on the track with DR's. I guess it really depends on your goals with the car, if you're strictly gonna race and you gonna start building the car beyond bolton's and slap a giant cam in it, by all means do it up. But if you want a street/strip car I don't think it's worth it.

Zero4488 Mar 5, 2009 01:03 PM

The gears will be matched with a nice cam and set of heads down the line....a 12 bolt isn't that far into the future...then again I know cars going 130 +mph with the 10 bolt....also that why he will be running a minimum of a 27" tire on the car and will be at 28"s in no time....

ABA383 Mar 5, 2009 01:18 PM

In n/a but even going from 3.73s and a 26" tire to 4.10s and a 28" dropped my 60's a little and made the car much more consistent...Also picked up mph from 119.75 to 121.18...I think I have my combo pretty much nailed dead on though...and I drive it everywhere and get 20 mpg on the highway...For a nitrous car with an A4 I'd probably stay in the 3.73 range...

I've ran my car with 3.42, 3.73, & 4.10 gear ratios. Each time I went to a lower gear the car picked up ET. MPH did not change going from 3.73 to 4.10. This is in a stock LT1 that only traps 106 though.

Gas mileage aside highway driving isn't that bad either. We haven't always had A-4 transmisions.
