SS4000....Is it too big for 2.73's???? Basically what the subject says. I have figured out that I have 2.73's. I really want the Yank SS4000 but I am thinking maybe i'll have to do a gear swap also. Can't afford both now so what do you guys think?? |
It will be loose! But, you should get a converter first. I know we have a few diehard 2.73 guys running larger stalls...hopefully they'll chime in. |
The SS3800 would be a good choice. It will provide a HUGE gain over the stock unit with 2.73s. The 3600 works well if looseness is a bigger concern. |
Yes, it will be loose. If you think you will do a gear later, go for it now though. Needless to say if you drive on the highway with it locked up, its not a prob. The reason *I* still have 2.73 gears is I'm not spending a f'n dime on this 2 cent 7.5" rearend, but it has not broke after hundreds and hundreds of passes... :judge: :jest: :chug: |
Defiantly gonna be loose but I think it would be ok and a very large improvement over the stock converter. Good Luck man WeS |
i have the ss3800 with stock 3:23's and I love it! |

Thanks C54U2NV, i am looking into the vig. 3600. I have a buddy who has the vig. 3200 in his vette and it seems to be pretty slow :barf: ...... so i am gonna go with a little bit bigger one. thanks for all your help guys |
Vig 3600? LOL.. that stalls to ~4300 and has a lower STR (you want more with those gears) It will be looser than the Yank 4000. |
 Everyone I have talked to said that PI converters stalled up about 400 more rpms than advertised. That would make the 3600 ~ 4000. Have I been misinformed?? |
Isnt the price difference between the Yank and the Vig. quite a bit?? |
In the LS1 world, the Vig converters stall higher than advertised.

How much of a differance would it be between a 3600 and 3800 stall for 2.73 gears? I don't think it would be much, because it is only 200 rpms, but the STR is .05 higher so I assume it should be almost exactly the same |
Not much at all, you were right in looking at the STR, that will determine the looseness of the converter. Should be about the same. Good Luck WeS |
If I plan on running nitrous do i need the balloon plate, or does it matter that much?? I know the Vig. comes with it. Would the vig. 3200 or the 3600 be best for my application. |
The balloon plate will offer a little extra added security bun not completly necessary. Good Luck man WeS |
I believe the SS3600 uses a different pump compared to the SS3800. If the pumps are different, the 3600 will be tighter and not have as big a shift extension. Either converter will make a big difference in performance. The STR is one factor in how loose a converter feels. For example, the YTP series have pretty high STRs but are very loose feeling because of their design that gives them a long shift extension. |
I think I'd go with an SS3800 for 2.73 gears in a daily driven car. The Vig 3600 stalls to about 4300 and would be some kind of MAJOR loose with 2.73 gears. No freakin' way would I drive that converter everyday with those gears. STR does have some effect on drivability although the stall speed has more. |
