Stall and 2.73's Ive got a 99 z28 with the 2.73 gears and i'm looking to get a stall. car is my DD so I'm loving the gas mileage the gears give me on long trips (i drive the car a bit, since May I've put 22K on it) With the 2.73 gears what stall size should i stick around? The car now is stock except for full exhaust. I was looking at a 3400 but I was really wanting something around a 3800-4000 but i don't know how having a stall that big would kill my daily driving ability and how well that would work with my gears.. Should i just buck up and get gears before a stall or would getting a stall right now be alright if i ever decide down the road to get some 3.42's or 3.73's? the mods i plan on doing are full bolt ons and spray |
3600 is a good street stall. Highway miles wont be affected any as the converter is locked. |
Yank SS3600 is a great all around stall !!!!!!!!!!! |
I have the Yank SS3800 with the 2.73s still. Great on the highway, on regular streets it will need a few rpms to get moving. Advice that I've followed was pick a stall speed that you want and go one step higher than that. Hope that helps. |

I had the same issue I changed my 2.73 to 3.73 and now i backed down to 3.42. This took my gas milege from approx 25mpg to about 15mpg but it did wake the car up. I would try the stall 1st and then consider gears. If you go to a 3 seriers gear you will have to change out the carrier to which runs about $500. Hope this helps |
the stall rpm is the rpm the engine could flash to if you mash the gas from a dead stop.your gas mileage will be effected if it is mostly city driving.you can program the speed your converter locks up at.alot of sales on good converters ,check the sponsors sales section .you could gain .5 sec with a good 3600 stall converter. |

I had a 01 trans am bone stock 4 cats and all I had a 3000 stall the best the car did with the stock stall was 13.7 just wit hthe 300 stall and tuning car went 12.9 with 2.73 gears. |
Stall speed is about the motor, not the rear end. Now, STR you may want a little higher to make up for the gearing. My theory is, if you're spinning in second then you're over-geared, and that was the case with 3.23s and 3.42s, 3000/2.2 and 3500/2.0 converters for me. I think you'll be fine with the SS3600 people are recommending, it's got more STR than I run. I'd say go with that, and if you are not spinning through the bottom half of second (and for some reason want to lose control and traction all the time) then you can consider gearing up. |
so you would recommend a 3600-3800 over a 4K stall? like i said i do some city driving but im mostly concerned with highway seeing that i drive back and forth to work 60 miles a day all highway. I have another vehicle i just want to wake this one up |
I think its pretty safe to say that 4000 would be a little loose with 2:73's but everyones opinions are different. The STR could help or hurt that situation. I have 2:73's and the STR on my 3600 is 1.78. I did this because it is more efficient on top, generates less heat, and doesnt hit as hard out of the hole as 2.5 str converter would. The "tightness" the converter is just right. Revs a little higher and you can tell its there when driving, but not something that gets annoying in traffic and DD duties. |
Keep the gears that you have if you plan on staying with the stock cam. If you go with a bigger cam that revs higher, you may want to get shorter gears to avoid staying in a particular gear too long down the quarter. |
IMO, a 3600-4000 stall would be intolerably loose around town with 2.73's. Of course, they're great for your highway commute. I ditched my 2.73's as soon as I could for 3.42's and have never looked back. The car is so much more responsive in city driving - either stalled or not. |
i plan on getting 3.73's if i ever get a cam. just boltons and my 2.73's with a stall are what i got planned now |
I have a SS3600 with a 2.5 STR and 2.73's. It gets a little annoying sometimes when cruising because its reeving so high 2500 to 3000 rpms and my camaro is loud as hell. The car starts to move around 1200 rpms But, putting my foot into it makes it all worth while! I have 255 BFG drag radials and it lights those up like there nothing. Before the stall I could stomp on it and nothing would happen. Another thing is when you try to burnout while braking. It takes a bit more RPMs to do this at a dead stop with 2.73's. Ive yet to take it to the track with the new set up but hope to this spring.... |
