Wanna run -8 AN Trans Cooler Line?
 

I hate that my B+M cooler has 1/2 NPT inlet/outlet threads and I have tiny stock transmission cooler lines running to it. I originally spliced off where the metal lines turn to rubber up by the radiator, and ran rubber cooler line to the cooler with 1/2 NPT barb fitting adapters. Im looking to bring the lines up to par and have put together a nice part list to help anyone else who wants to ditch their factory lines. You must change the adapters to the cooler to match your specific cooler application.

1. Cooler: B+M 70274

2. You replace the threaded cooler fittings on the transmission with an adapter -8 AN (male, line side) to 1/4 NPS (male, transmission side) fitting. These are the ones I found on Ebay:

3. From there you convert over to run braided AN style hose. So you need a female -8 AN (transmission side) to a hose end and it needs to be a 45 degree angle to exit the tranny: Summit part number SUM-220886. Thats for the red/blue but there are other colors available. You need 2.

4. Stainless braided cooler hose -8 AN. 20 ft. to be safe, cut to length: Summit part number SUM-230820

5. You need ends for the cooler. This will vary between coolers but 1/2 NPT female is pretty popular on plate coolers of decent size. So for that you would need an -8 AN hose end (hose side) adapted to 1/2 NPT (cooler side) male threads: Summit part number SUM-240103B. An alternate part number for a different brand: FRA-190168

6. If you want to change the way the line goes into your cooler here is a 45 adapter: Summit part number SUM-240110

7. -8 AN aluminum wrench (The fittings are easy to mess up): Summit part number SUM-900108

This replaces both stock cooler lines from the tranny all the way to the cooler and back. :usa:

Installed and running (pics soon): The trans has an HD2 kit, firmed shifts through HPTuners, and a 4k Yank. Thinking the bigger lines may kill some pressure for shifts. First impressions are great (cant go WOT until clutch packs break in), I can feel a low speed part throttle 1st gear >2nd shift. It doesn't quite feel right so I may work on that in the tune. Mid throttle/speed shifts feel perfect. No complaints. Fitment was great also with the 45s. I will get a pic of that.

I like the idea of going to a large tubing/hose size!

I wonder if the inside diameter on those -8 AN trans fittings is any larger that the factory ones, or the the -6 AN ones? Even if they're not, at least you'll still have the benefit of the larger ID for the 45* bend coming off the transmission.

Right, the limiting factor is the holes in the side of the transmission. I will say that the -8 braided line is about .4xx in I.D. An absolute full 7/16ths of flow. I will have to look at or measure the stock lines to see what kind of improvement we are getting.

I may have to give this a shot.

I have the same cooler and the stock rubber hose always keeps me concerned, ever since the one hot day I put the car into reverse and the hose popped right off the cooler inlet and spewed about 9qts of fluid everywhere! Those rubber hoses with metal band clamps suck, I check it a couple times per oil change now. I would love to go to an AN setup with the current cooler.

That was the exact reason I didnt like the way my car was setup. I knew I was playing with fire.

Yea, that'll quickly make a huge mess!

I had one pop off on me when I first tested my transmission. I was holding the hose on a piece of smooth tubing that looped back to the trans while someone else started the car. I relaxed my hands a little, and the hose shot itself off and coated the underside of the car with fluid.

Now, I put a metric bubble flare on the end of the tube. (Use an SAE clamp to hold the tube, and a metric flaring tool press to make the flare... 10mm I think.) Rough up the area behind the flare with a file, slide on the hose, and put on a clamp nice and tight. This method is absolutely rock solid, and if you properly prep the flared end, 1) you will not loose any inside diameter, and 2) the rounded ends of the bubble flare will not abrade the hose.

ugh I just realized I have the 70264
The inlet/outlet are just a straight piece with a flared end.
Looks like I would have to replace my cooler as well.

The Russell AN fittings for the trans come with copper washers instead of plastic ones...I thought I had remembered reading something about line pressure with the -8AN lines and
-6AN being large enough. Can't remember completely though

When I swapped to an auto the guys at rpm recommended -6.

If rpm would like to chime in I'm all ears.

I think hes got it on the condensor. After doing all my setups with coolers I know for a fact its the best place for it. If I didnt have cai I would have that cooler on my cond also:nod:

so how many fittings total do i need for this. just the 6 right? 2 off the tranny, 2 off the tranny fittings, then the other two for the trans cooler? and im actually thinking about doing -6an instead. i think the -8an might be overkill

They can do #8 as well, he just suggested that #6 was what they do for most people.

The 274 will not fit dope style in the traditional sense that everyone has pictures of. Its simply too big for that location. The 264 fits there perfect. Thats a cooler with barbed fittings on it though.

I will get some ASAP, I'm going under the car again tomorrow.

You need 2 converter fittings for the trans (1/4 NPS -> 6 or 8 AN), then you need your 2 45 barbed AN fittings, then 2 barbed AN for the cooler. So 6 total.

Gonna add my initial impressions of driving and actual fitment on the car in the original post.
