ongoing nightmare with a buddy's truck

ok here's the story from day 1.

it's a 150k mile 2002 Z71 with a 5.3 and 4L60. the trans was replaced with a 2003 unit around 100k miles.

my friend tells me his transmission went out, and a shop was going to charge him $3500 to replace it. i was like fuck that. i'll do it, because at this point i can pretty much do a 60e swap with my eyes closed and one hand behind my back.

i find a guy to rebuild it who seems pretty reputable(undisclosed until the issue is officially resolved or unresolved). so i just buy one of his trannies and exchange the bad one as a core. note: i did flush the cooler before installing the new one.

i get the new trans in the truck and fill it. it immediately slips in forward and reverse... once it gets warm it wont move, pukes fluid out from the front and back of the case and blows the dipstick tube out..... i take the tranny back out and exchange it again for the OLD transmission that originally came out of the truck which he rebuilt. he said the sprag and planetaries had totally come apart and destroyed everything, so he replaced everything inside. so i install the freshly rebuild old one which still slips in reverse and wont shift correctly. sometimes it starts out in 1st and bangs 2nd immediately then stays in 2nd or 3rd. it's hard to tell since he has 35s on it, and i dont know what final drive he has. i'm finally like wtf and hook up my scanner to find a "shift time solenoid" code present. i have no clue from which transmission this code was set. at this point we both ran out of time and patience and will resume this fiasco next month when we get back from training.

What did you use for a torque converter?

rumblebox Mar 27, 2011 11:26 PM

my old stocker. it's fine.

So you took a converter out of a transmission that destroyed the sprag and planetaries?
And you don't think theres any metal contamination coming out of it?

Get another rebuilt transmission, WITH a new converter, and flush the cooler or replace it.

no. i used MY old stocker from my car. not the one out of his truck.

Sounds like this guy doesn't know how to build trannies. :jest:

im beginning to think so. i cant think of an electrical problem that would make the trans slip in reverse but not forward.
