T56- Powerglide swap, tips, 1/4mile times, useful info
Hey guys, so I just swapped out my t56 for a 2 speed powerglide, Car is nearly stock engine power, just long tube headers.
So a few things you will need: trans cooler, new crossmember for th400/350,powerglide, longer driveshaft, and of course your powerglide,converter, and flexplate(spacer depending on your engine)
Fitment is great, just need to dent in the floor a little where the powerglide shifter arm comes down.
I recommend taking the starter off and getting to your flexplate/convert bolts where the starter was, just make sure the converter doesn't get pulled out of the pump, shimming may be needed, however mine did not.
Other than that its a pretty simple bolt in process.
Car has ford 9" 3.70 gears, 28.1050 slicks, bmr torque arm, subframer connectors, LCA, Panhard bar, all adjustable, stock springs and shocks. Engine wise it is a stock ls1 with long tube headers.
previous 1/4 mile times with the t56 on the setup seen above was: 13.6-13.8 with 102-103mph and stayed pretty consistent between those, 1/8mile times, 8.8-9.0, 81mph, 60ft stayed at 2.0-2.05 lauching at 5k rpm, (hooking too well, bogging the engine, tire pressure was 12psi)
Current 1/4 mile times with the same mods, but powerglide this time, (tci stall 2800rpm footbrake, 3000stall transbrake) 14.1-14.2 at 100mph, 1/8 mile 9.1s at 79mph, 60ft however stayed the same at 2.0.??
Overall I knew the car would slow down with the glide, I am starting my turbo build now, so once that is done, the glide should work much better in the car.

a higher quality stall with a higher stall speed and a 26" tire that car should run in the 12's but I understand that doesn't match your future build/goals.
You made the torque multiplication worse with the glides gearing and a much taller slick than needed for such a mild build , reduced the rpm you can leave at with such a conservative stall with an engine that is really a turd until it hits 3500 rpm or so - then its a whole different animal

Agreed, I wanted to start off with a smaller stall at first to see how she would do. Just like you said these cars seem to like higher rpm/midrange. Of course I only have a 28" tire because they came with the weld wheels I bought. I would like to go 275 dot radial tire instead. What do you think of that setup for a turbo build?
