so today I was backing out of my driveway and when I passed from reverse to drive pausing until I stopped in neutral then going to drive there was a loud bang in my transmission

any clue WTF that was?

Others have reported a similar bang when the transmission mount gives out. Check that first and if you have to replace it, get a stock rubber one, not a Poly one.
If the trans works and shifts ok, then it should just be the mount. Fingers crossed.
