Default Beafing up stock 4L60e (from S10) to use with 4.8 or 5.3 ?

I have a 4L65e/4.8 that came out of a 2002 Tahoe with 50,000 miles. I also have a 4L60e that came out of a 1998 S10 (4.3) with 80,000 miles. Both automatics have stock Torque Converters. I also have a 5.3 as well.

Either the 4.8 or the 5.3 will be going in my first track car and will be using drag radials.

It looks like its a popular swap for the full size chevy truck guys to use S10 torque converters due to high stall and good quality. See the link below.

http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/g...5-7-4l60e.html

To keep the cost down, I am thinking about using the S10 4L60e since it already has a higher stall compared to 4L65e. In addition, I will get the Transgo HD-2 shift kit and Corvette Servo with giant trans cooler.

The 4L60e will see about 350hp since the only mod I am planning on 4.8 or the 5.3 is a cam swap. No spray.

Any suggestions?

Well short of going into the unit you seem to have it covered. I would stay on the lighter side of TG shift firmness smaller feed holes suggested.

Is it worth while to beaf up with 4L60e or just use the 4L65e and beaf it up?

My logic was to use the 4L60e until it breaks and then use the 4L65e! Have invested only $150 in each.

Thanks

If both are in good shape either will probably fair equally as well.

I know that the S10 GEN II 4L60e converter will not work in the Gen III 4L65e for LS. More infor here:

http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/THE%20...%20Upgrade.htm

Do you know if there is another factory converter that has higher stall that will work with the Gen III 4L65e ?

Thanks

(The OP and I already discussed some of this by PM.)

First, in the picture of your 4L60E there is no bolt hole at the 12 O'Clock position. Therefore it is an "LT" style trans with 298mm input shaft and "LT" style converter.
It will NOT bolt up directly to an LS engine and you are correct that the converters are not compatible. IMO, it makes little sense to adapt it to an LS engine and certainly not to spend money for a good converter. I suggest selling in on Craigslist; you will likely get somewhere between $250 and $400 for it.

Instead just use your excellent 4L65E; it and the converter will bolt up directly to any LS engine. All stock converters have a low stall speed, typically around 2000 rpm. IIRC, the converter from a 2008 Trailblazer SS will have a stall speed around 2300 when used in a car. That is about as high as a stock converter will go.
I suggested to you (in a PM) getting a cam with 0 to 3 degrees of overlap, which is much higher than any GM part number. It almost demands a stall with 3000+ rpm or else the engine will bog at low rpm. Skip the cheap TCI, B&M and other converters in the under $450 range; OPs are having all kinds of problems with them in other threads.
While very good converters start at $750, CircleD has a good converter for $500 that members here have been very happy with.

I know you are moving towards a fun track car on a budget, but a "stock converter" and "track car" should never be used in the same sentence. (Other than this one.)

This is what I was thinking after I came across the post about the Trailblazer Torque Converter. Chris from Circle D said that any year with the 4.2. Years 02-09? VJCX is the converter code I should be looking for.

This is not a full blown race race but something cheap to have fun with. My local pic-a-part usally have several Trailblazers and can get the Torque Converters for $10!

I will just keep the 4L60e as a back up since it is in good shape.

Thanks

Default Another approach to using OEM converters for stall change

I plan to change my converter in my 00' Z28 SS..it has the B85 seies TMAX that is shown to stall at a hair under 1400rpm..my tranny guru friend (not a pro) said for my purposes to get a bit better launch with a LS6 enhanced replacement cam in my LS1 that to keep things conservative I should use either the TMBX (out of 2000-2004) 4.8L Tahoe (1650 stall) for 1750-1800 if I just want a mild bump..or the TMCX which GM calls High Stall from the 4.3L Astro van that is listed as 2075 stall but will give about a hair over 2200 stall due to the extra torque the massaged LS1 will put through the unit to the tranny..I plan to get a quality reman unit and paying a bit extra for anti balloon shields probably from Dacco.....SOOOO,.. my question is if any other tranny gurus are out there let me know if my buds suggestions hold water,..his reasoning they are all B85 series LS style late 4L60E converters with only stall mods being the difference as they are all 30 spline and 300mm like the TNAX low stall unit I will be yanking out...my cam is the comp cams XR265HR 212/218 dur 558/563 115LSA and 115 ICL....going for making it a bit stouter boulevard stoplight bandit and still keep my 20mpg avg

All LS-style (300mm input shaft) 4L60E converters are compatible. Get the highest stall "stock" converter you can. I know nothing about "reman units", but that would give me pause.
You can get a brand new much higher quality converter from a sponsor here starting around $450-$500. That might sound like a lot, but I assure you that I have read dozens (if not a hundred) threads by people who said that a quality stall converter was the best performance-per-buck improvement they ever made. Stay away from the under $450 converters from e.g. TCI and B&M; nothing but horror stories about them here.
