Default transmission slipping/chevy avalanche

My transmission started slipping almost completely one day as i took off to the store.got it back home barely but u could put it in drive or reverse and rev it to redline and the truck wouldnt move,.So i removed the pan and replaced the filter and fluid(only the pan fluid)the truck then worked fine for about another two months of daily driving and then on my way to somewhere nearby it pooped out again.I'd like to replace somthin simple, besides the transmission.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More info needed.

What did the fluid look like when you drained it the first time?

Ever check the pressure?

Will it go into 1st and 2nd fine, but redline when trying to go into 3rd?

Does it redline in reverse?

Is the fluid level currently okay?

And the fluid level is being checked with the engine running?
The fact that the trans worked fine after a fluid/filter change makes me suspect there is a fluid pickup problem. Perhaps a worn out seal for the filter?

nothing remarkable about the fluid....it may have been blacker than new fluid, never checked the pressure.won't go into any gear at redline or reverse.i think the levels ok.

You need a transmission.

Your filter was plugged, and now it is becoming plugged again, most likely with friction material. The most likely source of that much friction material would be the converter clutch. It's rebuild time, unfortunately...

If indeed the filter got clogged with converter clutch material, is is necessary to rebuild the trans or just replace the converter?

Well, as long as the damage was confined to just the converter, I suppose you could just replace the converter, but I wouldn't. You'll have clutch particulate everywhere inside the transmission, so you'll have that issue to deal with. That stuff gets absolutely everywhere, sticks valves in their bores, grinds up bushings, etc. Plus, there are some VB mods to be made that will help keep a new converter from suffering the same fate.

But, the bottom line for me is that there are so many worthwhile upgrades and changes to be made in a 4L60E, I'd certainly build one while I had it out...
