4L80 performance transmission buying/build question - future truck build
Transmission question for y'all: slowly gathering parts to build a turbo or S/C LS motor in a Chevy Colorado, thinking 5.3 or 6.0 . Planned on going with the 4l80 as I see a lot of guys on here run the 60s, build them up and usually end up killed them to , so logic would dictate just going straight to the 80 and save time, effort and troubles. Found two 4L80s for sale locally , one from a 99 2500 van and the other from a 06 2500 Silverado , are any years better than others or all the same . Didn't know if any revisions on electronics or passage ways , and is $400-500 average for a pulled "working" condition 2wd ?
Also am I better off cost wise buying a transmission locally and having a local shop build it up , or break out the credit card and just plop down 2000-2500 for an off the shelf unit. I was figuring 500ish for a used tranny and 1k having it built up ? Plus no core fee if buying local and built. That would shave almost 1k theoretically.
It would be ran either factory Ecu with tune , or if I get the ***** and go MS3 like Denmah/Sloppymechanic.

How much power are shooting for? Depending on circumstances, a built 4l60 can take a lot of power and could be more cost effective than a 4l80. It might be a good idea to talk to one of the sponsors here before making a decision. PerformaBuilt will ship you a trans for under $2000 that can handle up to 700 rwhp with no core charge. If you're only looking at 450 HP or so, you have more choices.

If I had to pull numbers out my ***, I'm going to say the 400-600 range, mayyyybe 700 wishful thinking ? Take a work truck sealed beam series Colorado , throw a LS Motor and make it a fun driver that can fry tires and colloquially **** n get whenever I want. One of those I never expected that reactions from something that looks like a beater.
Part of me wants to go cheap and easy and just throw in an LS motor with probably a cam and maybe some other simple performance stuff and be done with it , and the other part of me with the devil on the shoulder wants to go wild and throw a turbo or blower on it and make it a sleeper , but it would be my first forced induction motor. My last motor was a 1972 Chevy c10 with a fully built 400 sbc with DART heads, full MSD setup, QFT billet 750cfm carb, 700r4 built tranny, but that was a truck I bought completed, drove for a year and sold for a profit.
