Default First time rebuilding a 4L60E, worth the risk?

Time to rebuild my 4L60E, 3-4's are out of the game. I've done extensive research and watched numerous videos of rebuilds. I can't say that I find it difficult for me as I'm good when it comes to doing things myself, but I fear of messing up the rebuild somehow even though I'll follow the rebuild guide step by step. I already have enough money for a Pro Street Elite kit from Dana. (Any opinions on that kit?)

Should I go for it?

Also I can't seem to get ahold of him or login to my account on his website. What's the problem?

Many of the most active members on this section of the forum, myself included, decided to "go for it", learned a lot in the process and now try to help the "next" generation.

Here is a thread on the subject:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...questions.html

While I'm sure Dana's kit is very good, I have steered a lot of people to TruTechTrans (web and ebay) and those members have been very happy with the responsiveness and telephone help. Instead of picking one of their advertised kits, I always suggest calling and having them design a custom kit for your exact needs and preferences.

I assume you have seen this thread which covers every step with great photos.

I would suggest having a local trans shop help a bit, as in cleaning the disassembled case, examining the inside of the pump for excessive wear and installing teflon rings. Give them a few bucks and some shops will be very helpful.

I say dive in head first. I did last spring and it worked out for me.

Now I'm hooked and find myself in the automatic section on here quite often. It really is very interesting seeing how it works.

Here are a couple more threads, this one was a good read.

And this is my thread. Not extremely organized but quite a few pictures and shows some newbie problems.

Thanks for the boost of confidence. And yes, I've definitely seen these threads and considered the kit from TruTech. Problem is, I don't see them including the electronics, and since I'm a noob, I fear missing something if I buy them from another vendor. I definitely like the Stage IV kit even though you said that Stage III is already an "overkill" for a stock LS1, but wouldn't the extra goodies make the transmission life longer? I'll be using the car for daily driving to college, which is pretty far.

I would've definitely ordered it and didn't mind waiting, but I can't log into my account again for some reason (can you?), and I've already created two of them. The moment I logout it never logs in again. If it weren't for that technical difficulty I would've ordered already, but I fear the website screwing me and never track my order again.

Yes I might just do it after all. Ever since the transmission went out I found myself being interested in transmissions too. Not amused on how pricy the good kits are though lol. I'll definitely be checking these threads when I get my kit. I just hope that Dana replies soon, or I might just go with TruTech.

I ordered the electronics as a complete set from Amazon, AC Delco brand, since the kit didn't come with them.

What year is your 4l60e?

Mine is 2002.

Okay, then you don't have to worry about updating the overrun spring cage. Sometime in the late 90's they changed it and the piston. The kits always/usually come with new pistons but my '96 4l60e had the old style overrun spring cage, so I had to buy the updated overrun spring cage to be compatible with the new style overrun piston.

And yes, you can buy the harness with all the solenoids and the manifold pressure switch as a set.

That's good to hear. I wouldn't need to worry about a part that doesn't fit. I'll wait for either Dana or TruTech to reply, and then go with the best option.

Man......go for it!! Don't listen to the nay sayers that are bound to show up (typically transmission shops). Take the plunge and learn. The worst that can happen is....it doesn't work. But I would put money on your build working just fine.
