Default 4l60e slips but is fine after I restart

Ok guys, my 02 avalanche started slipping on the way home from work. Fluid was a little low so I topped it off about a half quart. Took it for a ride and when she warms or drive about a mile she starts to slip then failing altogether, I can turn it off and restart and its fine. I know it could be going into limp mode but I thought I'd still have 3rd gears to. The trans shifts fine after this but about a mile down the road same thing. No check engine light. The gear indicator on the dash also gose crazy sometimes. The trans was rebuilt 5 months ago. I decided to drain the pan and fluid looked good and there wasn't much on the magnet on the pan plug. Put new fluid back in and still the same problem. I got an upgraded rebuild but not sure if he replaced the solenoid. Can someone point me in the right direction before I take her to the shop. Thanks!

Pulled the codes and I do have a mas high output but didn't illuminate the check engine light, never heard of this throwing it in limp mode.

If the trans stops pulling it is not because of limp mode. Sounds Like a stopped up filter.

Hmmm, your right! It's not limp mode because it's slipping and not locking in 3rd gear. So your thinking that my pressure drops when I shut off the truck clearing the pump intake? That why I'm able to drive it again after I restart... Make sense! Thank you sir, I'm going to change the filter...

You're welcome. Glad it worked out for you. May I ask what was in the filter?

Looks like grime and a small amount of metal shavings, took a magnet to the inside of the filter and got very little material. I bet my builder didn't change the filter from the 1st rebuild 3 years ago or 5 months ago, gonna be giving him a call. The magnet on the pan had about a 1/16 of material on it hopefully from break in.

The fluid that you drained the 1st time wasn't dark and smelled burnt? That's a lot of clutch material in that filter.

Ya I know thats why I'm thinking "hoping" the builder didn't change the filter. So I poured the fluid on a paper towel and it was dark red with a hint of burnt smell. Ill take a pic of the paper after work.

It really depends if the builder went through it all the way. Some builders are messy and others are clean. They might not have flushed the cooler lines and that's just leftover trash. You have to think....if the filter is getting clogged where is the stuff coming from?

I did the install myself, flushed the lines with cleaner and compresses air. Not sure what to say about the clogged filter but I'll check is again after 500 miles.
