Which kit to buy (4l60e) Hello everyone, working on my winter bird (2000 Pontiac Trans am) project... . Looking for something to beef up the 4l60 to handle power from a mild cam (228r) and heads (stage 2.5 243s from TSP). I don't have a HP goal, but want the tranny to hold up to atleast 450hp. I plan to run a TCI Super Street Fighter 3600 stall with a Hayden 404 cooler. Gonna be a summer car/DD with maybe 3-4 passes at the strip per year. Any recommendations? Recommendations for different Cooler or TC is welcome too! |
Skip the inefficient junk tci converter and go with a better brand. Skip the tube style cooler and go with a plate style cooler. |

Yeah I did see they were one of the popular ones... I'll look into that. What I need is a shift kit/rebuild kit also haha. Any recommendations? |
Pro built Automatics out of California currently has the most complete kits on the market. Great instructions also. Guy that runs it goes by "PBA" here on the forums. |

I would only use a TCI converter if it had a billet front cover. You need this for clutch surface area and better clutch material. Probably safest to do as advised above, and just get a Yank. |

Stay away from tci convertors. trust me on that. Get a yank. On those monster transmissions, those are a ripoff. They charge way too much. personally I'd never sink that kind of money in a 4l60. I just snapped the output shaft in mine this sunday. I was thinking about doing a how to thread on rebuilding them. I'm gonna pull it out Saturday. |

Not butthurt about anything. I don't care which kit you use...it won't affect me lol I don't sell parts. I don't sell transmissions on this page. I don't get any kickback for recommending one part or another. I post here all the time and just share info. Your choice if you want to use it or not. I just gets irritating posting here all the time and seeing people be SO DENSE that they can't even search for a brand they are considering. Loads of bad reviews. Horror stories. An OPEN lawsuit for crying out loud...and you still asked about monster I cant tell if people are just ignorant, lazy, or eternally optimistic and ignore whatever they do find. |
Well thank you regardless. Guess some people have different methods of delivering a message, so it's all good. I'll look into pba but might be outta my budget for now. |
I may have misunderstood or misread the site too... The 4l60 pro street kit... Does that include the trans go shift kit I'd need too? I saw the options for the add ons but wasn't for sure what the kit included/what else I'd need. Plus I do everything from a mobile phone, it's hard for me to see all the posts when I'm trying to jump between sites haa |
It sounded like you were going to build it yourself. not sure buying a kit and handing it to a shop would be the thing to do, my guess is there would be alot of parts not actually used unless you build it yourself. |
All of my rebuild kits for the 4L60E include the modified TransGo Performance Shift kit. Order any way you want. Call me if you want too. If over 50,000 miles on the transmission, I would get the pre-drilled separator plate option. As long as the 1-2 shift is still ok (not slipping), then you do not need the reverse input drum option. |
Yeah I really didn't wanna drop it off somewhere without knowing everything is actually being put in it. Probably work on it myself, can't be that difficult if you got the tools and patience right? Lol |

Lol personally id skip the shift kit. I’m a firm believer in Don’t fix what ain’t broke. If you go messing with shift timing then it causes premature clutch failure. Ever wonder why a factory trans lasts 100k+ miles and a rebuilt unit with a shift kit lasts about 45k Miles. That’s because the shift kit slowly kills it. I drill the plate to let more fluid flow and improve upon the internal leaks, put improved clutch packs and hard parts in. Keep it simple. |
