Questions about these 6L80's etc. Been looking at the problems these have with the Torque converters/ clutches. So is there a fix for it? All the youtube videos show the issue but haven't seen much about the real fix, that I say would be to get rid of the on and off use of the clutch (modulation and slipping it during normal driving), similar to what can be done with the 4L60's. Has anyone done such thing? |
IMO the best thing to do is tune it so as the TCC is only engaged in 5th and 6th gear. Maybe 4th and increase TCC apply pressure a little. |

GM has them tuned to lock up in very low gears/ speeds to pad their mileage numbers, at the expense of transmission longevity. Beware that once the torque converter goes bad on one of those units (or any, for that matter), it spreads metal shavings all over the transmission, and usually requires a full rebuild. |
And what device is needed to tune them? Bidirectional scan tool? Only something like a Tech 2 ? Or? |

Factory 6L80, 8L80 and 10L80 tune sucks. Biggest thing I have found to make them more liveable is disable lockup on gears 1-4 all together and stretch out the shift points by a good bit. They lug the shit outta them and overstress everything in them from the torque converters to the clutches. Its all to get the damm EPA numbers for cafe and emmissions. They don't build them for us they build them to meet govt requirements first followed by the masses of sheep. The sheep don't wanna feel tranny shift or feel/hear any driveline NVH and still deliver respectable power. They hit a pretty good medium it just is hell on trannys to get there and not in line with what gearheads want or expect. |
