IDing 700 & 4L60's
 
Is there a standardized way of finding the year and type of vehicle the trans was built for ?
Also where to find this info. thanks,RJ

Yes there is a white tag on the bell-housing. The first digit is the year. The 2nd is the vehicle body. The 3rd is the engine. The same code is on a flat spot of the case, just above the right rear corner of the pan. You will need a wire brush. It also tells the Julian date of the build. This includes date of build, shift of the build.
In this case 4YK is a 1984 "B" car (wagon) 5.7L build on the 77th day of the of the year and the "A" shift (A being days, B being afternoons, C being nights)
