Help! 4L60E won't shift
 

The car is a 98 LS1 Camaro, it was going from a 20'ish roll and he punched the throttle, when it went to shift third it popped into neutral and free revved, now reverse will not work at all and it doesn't seem to shift out of first gear (Manually or otherwise).

It also seems to make whining noises when its "free revving" in reverse.

Sounds like the Reaction Sunshell is broken/stripped. When this happens, you loose Reverse, Second and Fourth.
That whinning noise is most likely whats left of the shell's splines grinding on the sun gear. Its not an expensive part, but it does require removal of the transmission.

Sounds like you nailed it! We are considering pulling the transmission today and seeing if we can get that thing out to examine it.
