Default A4 Lockup question?

What does this mean. I am new to the A4 world and am wondering what you all mean when you talk about the tranny being "locked-up". Someone please explain.

People are referring to the convertor locking. From Howstuffworks.com:

"[....] some cars have a torque converter with a lockup clutch. When the two halves of the torque converter get up to speed, this clutch locks them together, eliminating the slippage and improving efficiency."
