Converter and rpm's ?'s

At this point I have the mods I listed in my sig...
Once I move up with a Converter (3500 stall, with a 2.5 str) what will my rpm's drop to going into 2nd and 3rd? Right now it drops real low but I am hoping with the converter it will keep the car in the power band.
Let me know, and FYI, my car has the 2.73's.

You should be 4000-4400 rpms between shifts. The dead spot will be eliminated with the 3500 stall as well.

So you are saying with the new stall and converter and what not, my shift points will be as high as 4-4500, becuase right now, they are at about 2-2500 :barf:

When I had my Yank TT3000 and 2.73's, my rpm's was 3900-4000 between shifts. Since you are using a 3500 stall, you will be a bit higher. With a MW3600 Stall and 3.42's, I was 4800-4900 rpm between shifts. Gears will help too.

DeViOuSwOn May 27, 2005 03:28 PM

Now is this corrected with a tune or does it do it automatically with the converter?

Blacker May 27, 2005 03:35 PM

It does it automatically since there is more slippage with the higher stall torque converters. You might want to bump up the shift firmness but, that doesn't affect the how far the rpm drops between shifts. The higher the stall, the higher the rpm's are between shifts since the have even more slippage. While you are at it, install an external cooler. With more slippage come more heat.

Yea, I figured that much. I was going to go with a package from Fuddle as soon as I get the money ready, hopefully in a couple weeks. But thanks for all of your help.
And with my mods... is a 3500 right? The most I will do is a cam...

3500 stall converters are a great choice and will give a nice bump in performance. They work well with aftermarket cams too.

Now I know the claims of these things taking off .5 tenths, but is this because of the better launch you will have? Will the difference be noticed screwin around on the street, doin a few second gear pulls?

You will definitely feel it!! :burn: The bulk of the gain is from the launch but also it's the ability of the stall that keeps the engine in it's power band longer between shifts that make a big difference as well. I've heard of .6-.8 gains from big converters.

How is the 3500 with 2:73 gears for average (granny) cruising around the street 30-40 mph and stop and go traffic?
A friend of mine told me that a 3500 stall and my 2:73 gears will be bad because the stall would be too high for the gear.
BTW, if I average now 20 MPG with my stock engine and gears, how would just the convertor alter my gas mileage if I don't change the way I drive after the convertor is installed?
I know performance and mileage don't go that well together, I'm just curious.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

2-3 shift my rpms drop to around 4200-4300 rpms. Driving around town the rpms will be around 2000-2500rpms for normal acceleration. 3.23 gears.

With 2.73s i think it'll be looser for you but the shift extension should be around the same rpms that mine drop to.

radz282003 Jun 2, 2005 04:29 PM

I have a SS3800 and at WOT the extension is around 5200 - 5400 RPMs. Hope this helps.

Well thank you all very much. This helped a great deal.

What these people are discribing is called "shift extension". I have a Y3000 2.0 STR coupled to 3.73 gears. Upon agressive acceleration to WOT, my RPM's will go up to 4800, and upon "up shifting" come out of the shift @ 4400 RPM (3.73's spool higher).

You will need to adjust your shift points, and idle after the install, I did so by having my vehicle professionally "dyno tuned" to get the optimum performance possible.

SteveC :)
