Default Removing the dust covers/bellhousing covers?

How bad/harmful is it to leave the dust covers/bellhousing covers off of the bottom of the transmission? The drip hole is leaking a little oil onto my turbo pipes and in return, burning it all up. I'd like to stop this...so would it be ok to leave that little cover off? Thanks.
