Torque Converter Won't Lock Up Does anyone know what might be the problem? The mill light comes on and the code says Transmission Component Slipping I tried to lock it up manually and it wouldn't |
When the slip code comes on, mine won't try to lock up. The slip itself is always in the converter. It seems to go away next key-on cycle. Too much slip above the max slip RPM for too long, sets it. I have raised the max slip RPM (since I don't feel like raising the line pressure by force motor, any more than I already have). |
Mine's doing the same thing, but now when I come to a complete stop its not shifting any suggestions. I have to shift it manually. arghhh not one its antoher |
Make sure you drive around town in D not OD. That will help prevent the car from going into limp mode. That's a common problem people see , but it's as easy as changing your driving habits. If your getting a miss fire code (flashing SES) from a big cam then the converter will not lock up until you correct that problem. I hope this helps! |
Sorry there wasnt a little more info. My internet has been down for a little while so I told my g/f what to post. Thanks for replies.. Im about to start searching but I got under the car and looked at the tq converter. It looks like fluid is coming from around the back of the converter where it fits on the input shaft. is there a seal right there or anything? Also would that cause line pressure to go down which in turn keeps it from locking? Its been fine for the last 4 months what could have caused this? Is it ok to drive as long as I keep it full of fluid? |
i just got my motor put back together with a semi big cam so I think I know whats causing my problem. Its fine now. just a pain in the azz when it happens. sounds like you lost a seal or something. |
Ok after reading a lot it seems that the front seal is a common problem. I thinking that this is probably the problem so im going to pull the tranny and find out this weekend. My question now is would this stop the torque converter from locking up alltogether? It does lock at all even if I try manually. Also when I let it kinda idle to a stop light or away if feels very jumpy. Could it have messed up the converter? |

i'd get it looked at before puttin it back in. i'm pretty sure if it had a leak, then it wasn't getting enough pressure to lock up and consequently that might have done additional damage. |
lock up the reason it wont lock up is because you have a trouble code probably an 1870 that keeps the computer from locking up a common problem is that the valve bodies wear out i would recomend a redesigned isolater vavle from transgo or a valve body with an oversized vavle |
I appreciate it. I just hope its nothing broke inthe converter or that it dididnt cause anything to be broke. |

So, ill try and keep in "D/3rd" till I am able to get above 40 then throw it into "OD/4th".. Thanks |
