Who has 4.10's in an A4???
 

Well I just got a good offer for my 3.73's and I think I'm goin to sell them and get 4.10's and still have a little cash. What do you guys think about your 4.10's?? Are they good for street driving?? Well I need to go now and I appreciate any input you guys can give! Thanks!

If you don't really do any driving on the highway and stay away from the track this is an awesome mod for a street only car assuming you can set up your shift points right. I know almost everyone will say don't do it in an A4 but that is what I would do if I ever decide to upgrade from my current 3.23's. Not worth the money to go to 3.73's for me. Someone I know used to have 4.10's in his 96 Trans Am and they were f-ing awesome! He could actually break the tires loose at very high speeds. The only thing that sucked for him was the bad gas mileage, but LS1's also do a little better than LT1's with that now don't they!? <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

i had them in mine. if you plan on doing nitrous or torque converter or going to the track then stick with 3.73's.

because with 4.10's i was finishing in OD which you dont want to do. plus you will have traction issues

4.10's in an A4 >> Awesome! I'm currently running a 4500 PI converter with 4.10's and it's a great combo. I can cross the line in 3rd only because my shift points are set at 6600. You might already have a HPP3 since you have 3.73's so that solves that problem, if not???

Traction? What tire do you run at the track? I managed OK with my drag radials. You gotta' learn to launch the car with 'em, but when you do, it's great! Even on the street you can get decent traction if you learn to launch it.

I went from 11.64@116 to 11.63@118 switching from 3.23s to 4.10s. I also lost about 30 miles to the tank doing mostly highway driving.

60' with 4.10s (on that run)was 1.60
60' with 3.23s (on that run) was 1.72

Same track, same weather, etc. So far I am not impressed with the 4.10s, although they make the car an "animal" on the street. If you go from 3.23 to 4.10s you probably need to add more stall to keep the shift extension. I'm going to try raising my shift points from the current 6400 to 6800 soon. On the dyno I make OK power up to 7000rpm.

I think it would depend on the mods on your car,If you have heads and cam car then your red line would be around 7000 and if you had the traction 4.10 should benifit at the track. If you are stock internals you would be above your power curve before going thrugh the traps . Like i said it all depends on your current set up, Goodluck.

How could it hurt me at the track??? I'm not sure how it would hurt me on the track and not on the street. But thanks for the info

All I can say is I hope that you're going to run some STICKY tires, and a properly tuned suspension would help out a lot. While I wasn't running at the best track in the world, I was still have some traction problems w/ my Vig 3200/3.73:1 combo on Hoosier slicks! I'm crossing the line at 5,700, and 4.10's would actually be optimum for my setup, holding traction constant (yeah right). 4.10's would put me right around 6,265 RPM through the traps, and that would be ideal for my setup. My shift points are at 6,200, FWIW, and I'm running stock internals. If you have a stock-internal engine, I think 4.10's will be a waste. I wouldn't want the added traction woes personally.

I have 4.10's in an A4.

Really it makes sense if you are looking to extract every bit of performance out of your car.

Otherwise, don't, gas mileage doing 3000 rpms on the highway all the time really goes down.

It is just possible that I could be doing a 6speed swap, that is if my tranny desides to die on my again and I doubt I will be doing much track racing anyway so I might go ahead and go with the 4.10's and I think I can handle the traction problems with a little something called ET STREETS and a hand full of suspension parts I have picked out. But it just depends on if my job comes through this summer and the tranny doesn't go before then

Allright I would like everyones opinion based on my current mods and the fact that I drive car everyday and lots of dragracing on weekends 4.10s good or no good for me! <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> Thanx <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

I think that they make sense AFTER doing a converter.

I hope those suspension parts include a front Hal shock/spring setup because the ET Streets are a joke with my Vig 3200/3.73:1 combo.

IMO, you shouldn't mix 4.10's and daily driver in the same sentence. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> 3.73's are definitely the max I would want for a driver. I took a 700 mile trip last week in my SS, and I averaged 22.5 MPG w/ the 3.73's. It's down 2.5-3 MPG from when I had the 3.23's. I would HATE to see it with 4.10's!

Regarding street driving with 4.10s, its not that bad. I lost about 30 miles per tank compared to my 3.23 gears (~2mpg, mostly highway driving). I generally do ~75mph on the highway. Also FWIW I just added Hal shocks and drag springs, and as I suspected they are a total waste of money from a 60' point of view. They do help you pull tire easier which is a bit more fun though. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

4.10's

+car will pull harder in 3rd at the track
+car will pull harder on the highway from a roll
+more optimized for the drag strip

-traction is a joke with stock radials
-more fragile than stock 3.23 gear, more teeth
-need to figure out good shift points with HPP or you will be shifting into OD on the track.
