Default I had to have overfilled this thing

I busted my deep tranny pan a couple blocks from my house the other day, leaving a small trail of oil all the way home. Car ran fine, leaked a ton of fluid onto my garage floor. I put the new pan on today, and was told by the tranny builder I may have to put 10-12 quarts in it. I started with 8, then 10, then 12. The damn dipstick is just always covered in fluid, no matter how much fluid. I can't get a reading. The tranny is warm, it runs fine, and no fluid is coming out of the vent. But 12 quarts is a ton, and its too hard to get any kind of a real accurate reading on this stick. Its pissin' me off. I feel retarded here, something this simple. Would it come out of the vent if it was overfilled?

Dry the dipstick with a paper towel and make sure
the little holes in it are clear. Let the juice settle
(run in park but no filling or moving) and use the
holes to see whether you're over the top, they
don't fill unless submerged though the stick faces
will get wet from the tube wall. Reading the face
is pretty impossible but the holes seem to work.
