No 2nd or 4th gear

Okay Ive got an LS1 4L60E that wont go into 2nd or 4th gear. if I leave it in drive it will shift from 1st to 3rd only after letting off on the gas, and if I manually put the car in 2nd gear its like its in neutral. This is in a 60 Impala with a B&M shifter.

you have a brocken reaction shell. very common on these, you also should not have reverse.

SprayJ 11-27-2005 11:48 PM

Ive got reverse though, its the craziest thing...

BeachZ 11-28-2005 11:28 AM

Sounds like the car's in limp mode. In limp mode, you basically have just third and reverse.

The band is probably broken or burnt. A sunshell will cause no reverse, 2nd or 4th, a bad band will cause just no 2nd and 4th.

I'm with you bro.........except after this weekend my car only has reverse, 1st and 2nd.
No 3rd or 4th. Only have 18,563 on the car but she gave up the ghost. Spraying thru shifts and more than 500 tq I think are what did mine in.

Exactly. That was the case with my wife's B4C when we picked it up at the police auction. Tore it down and sure enough the sun shell was shot.

I just went thru the same thing on my newly fully built 700R4 on my GMC Syclone. I lost 2nd and 4th and it shifted from 1st directly into 3rd just like you described. I had to pull the tranny and the builder walked me through disassembling it over the phone. It wasn't as bad as I thought, all said and done. The anchor pin that holds the band to the case, sheared off. I put a new anchor pin in, and a new band (to be safe) and it worked on the first try. :)

My problem was the Yank Pro Extreme converter was so loose at cruise RPM that I thought the tranny was slipping/shifting soft. We kept increasing the strength of the 1-2 accumulator spring until it felt better. Eventually it broke the pin because the tranny was actually shifting hard internally but the converter was softening it up so I never knew. The solution was to reduce the 1-2 accumulator back to a normal "performance" spring, and increase my part throttle shift MPH a few higher. Just 3 mph later shifts made all the difference in the world, with this converter.

i agree, band is what engages 2 and 4.

i have no 4th and was told that when the band starts to go bad will hold 2nd but has no chance on 4th. sound right?
