Can the torque converter lockup system cause my chunky shifting problem?

Can the torque converter lockup system cause my chunky shifting problem? My transmission shifts really really hard into 3rd and out of 3rd. It feels like it slams into that gear and you can hear a bang.
I'm wondering if the torque converter lockup be the cause of this. Maybe it's locking up and making this slam into the gear everytime it goes in/out of 3rd.
Anyway to disable the lockup system to check?
