I voted used laptop although it was not me that actually did it. New Era Performance (sponor --->) installed my torque converter. Then for only $40 they used HPtuners to delete TM, raise line preasure and I think they also raised the rev limiter. It was money very well spent as my car shifts very crisp and I didn't have to go through the expense of a shift kit.
I have heard that 98-00 models do not usually require a tune or shiftkit (although one or the other is still a good idea). But 2001 & 2002 must have TM deleted to avoid problems and throwing codes.

I thank all the voting and feedback, I want this install done right, but I live so far from any reputable sponsors, So I guess I'll get it installed and drive to Chicago for a tune,
I wanted to get a predator.
But from what I gather, it's taking forever to get responses, and tune upgrades, Besides we still have 4 feet of snow and wont be till mid April I can get her out. anyways, I think I'm beginning to suffer from cabin fever. I hate snow, But my business rocks, an my car has low mileage

I was old school and used a hypertech to raise shift points...this was 5 years ago before any real LS1 tuning software was out. I had it all dyno tuned with ls1 edit when that finally came out.
With just raised shift points, it drove fine.

Any transmission will feel better than OEM, especially a stalled one. The changes I make on autos usually returns these kind of comments: "the car is a totally different animal" "passing vehicle now is a lot more fun". Just by changing the TCC Apply/Release table, Part-Throttle/WOT Shift tables and the Force Motor table. But each person will like the settings slightly different, obviously.

I just installed my fuddle 3400 with a friend last weekend on my car...It was a pain in the ***.
I'd say that you should get it tuned after the install. Mine feels like it needs the line pressure raised so I should get it tuned. It also seems to overrev at the 2-3 shift as the rpms go a touch over 6500 for a second!
My stall is pretty small compared to most, but WOW it made an amazing difference in my car...first gear is pretty much useless under full throttle. That just means I'll have to get drag radials sooner.
I'll probably send my ecu back to PCMs for less very soon to get retuned for the stall.

No tune here. Just put it in and drove.
I have a fuddle 3000 with a 2.0 str.
First gear shift's a tad early, about 5900 rpm, but 2nd to 3rd didn't change.
I would say put it in and drive around for a bit. If your car's not hitting the rev limiter, or shifting below 5800 rpm's, I don't know if a tune is called for.

i haven't tuned mine yet but need to. it hits the rev limiter between 1-2 and 2-3 shifts everytime. i even had the limiter increased before the tc install, but i don't remember what RPM it was set at.

I ran mine for a year w/o a tune. But I had to get a tune after the cam swap. When I got the PCM back (I sent it out) it made a world of difference in the way the tranny acted. It shifted way hard at WOT. I would recommend a tune.

anytime you upgrade something on your car you can tune it, b/c things change everytime you add new things. might not be alot but its enough to matter. but when you go from a stock TC to an aftermarket TC its a must, like other have said tune your can and enjoy the benifits of the new TC

I ran my Yank Y3200 two years without a tune and it was fine. Then I got a good tune on it and it was much better with more precise shifts. When I switched to a TCI 3800 it needed a tune right away because it wouldn't lock.
