Spraying through the converter???

Can someone explain to me what exactly it means to be "spraying through the converter" I believe it to mean your stall is too big to spray with. Is this correct? I plan on installing a tsp magicstick cam and stage 2 ls6 heads from TSP soon. I also plan on spraying a 200 shot on this setup. I currently have 4.10s and vig3000. Yesterday i ran 12.3@108 n/a and 11.2@119 n2o(150hp). What do you guys think i should do with my stall and gear setup to prepare for the H/C and extra spray? Any special tuning i should have done?

Basically the converter can't hold the extra power you are throwing at it and it slips up high. So the extra power you are making at the engine never makes its way to the pavement.

it' kinda like if you started feathering the clutch at wot. Sometimes it's not even noticable, so it really needs to be checked on a dyno.

The Vig converter you got is pushing it on a H/C 200 shot car, but it should work.

BTW your gonna spray a 200 shot on a H/C stock block and stock tranny, good luck?

DannoWS6 02-28-2006 07:42 AM

Oh yeah. "Any special tuning i should have done?"

H/C N20, gears,.... yeah you need tuning.

UL LOSE 02-28-2006 01:57 PM

Well I basically plan on the trans. and 10 bolt going out. Im gonna replace them anyway. Will have 4l80e and 9 inch or 12 bolt. But yeah im gonna go as far as the stock block takes me. I know people that have done it without anything breaking. If it does break ill just forge it and go for more. Anyway everybody says you want at least a 3500 stall and 4.10s with the magicstick cam n/a. So i figure the 3000 stall should work on the spray. What about that?

DannoWS6 02-28-2006 02:11 PM

I would talk to a vendor like Yank or Vig and explain to them your power levels and goals. The 3000 is not the best for your setup, I can tell you that now.

You need to get setup w/ a better n20 converter anti ballon plate etc. They will probably set you up with more of a 3600ish converter.

I could be wrong but the 4l60e converter might not mate up to the 80 anyways, so you have to check that to in preparation.

UL LOSE 02-28-2006 02:16 PM

what exactly do you mean by a "n2o converter" Whats the difference. Please excuse my ignorance
BTW i was told the converter would mate up to the 80. How many tenths will i see n/a with the 3600 over my current stall. Im already running 1.5s 60'

Usually Billet covers, Kevlar clutches, 6 bolt lugs.

The 3000 will work, I think a 3600 would be better. You do have 4.10's though.

I think you 60's will improve with the converter swap alone as long as you are running some good meats.

If you were pure NA I would say go for a 4000ish. You don't want to go too loose with a 200 shot and those gears.

...like when you put 500rwhp through your TCI streetfighter and it goes straight to the rev limiter every time on the dyno...

I bought a real converter and haven't had a problem since.

...the funny (well, not so funny) part is that happend after I PM'ed Kevin Winstead and he recommended the TCI SF and said NO PROBLEM it will hold the power, and then when it didn't he offered to LOWER THE STALL to help it hold the power.

LMAO.

Im not against changing the gears also. I basically just want to know whats the best stall/gear combo to run with the magicstick, stage 2 ls6 heads, & 200 shot. But everybody says you want 4.10s and at least 3500 stall with that cam. I dont know. Let me know what you guys think.

UL LOSE 03-01-2006 12:29 AM

Is magicstick good to 7000rpm? This is what ive heard. Dont worry about the valvetrain i plan on modding it too. If so the 4.10s and 3500 sound pretty good to me. Im gonna call vigilante and see what they recommend. I think i can guess what theyre gonna say. Theyre gonna tell me not to spray at all if i wanna hold my bottom end, tranny, driveshaft, and rear end together! lol
Theyre probably right but what the hell. You only live once.

PREDATOR-Z 03-01-2006 07:54 AM

I use a Vig 3200, good till 200 + shot.

DannoWS6 03-01-2006 10:12 AM

W/ the 4.10's just don't spray outta the hole. Ideally 3.73's would probably be better on spray.

The magic stick will take you to 7k, 6800 might be better though. I guess you'll see on the dyno.

Know of a car that had a stock ls1 block and pushed 680 to the wheels!

CONVERTOR 101
You should not pick your stall you should tell the converter company what you have power weight quarter mile times how much spray ect.....and they should build the converter fitted for your setup.

Exactly

In regards to power I have seen LS1's hit 800hp.

It would be a good experiment to see how long it lasts for you :)

Lesson learned, believe me. I spent a pretty penny on my new one but it kicks major ass. Billet front cover, billet anti-ballooning plates, kevlar clutches, heavy-duty internals... Supposed to be good to 1000rwhp, and I believe it. :secret2:

I appreciate the advice guys. Ill talk to vigilante asap. Let you guys know what they say. Thats how i ended up with a 3000,they recommended it because my car was stock with 4.10s. But now its a different story.
