Transmission removal, NEED HELP!

i need help w/ getting the top 2 bolts out of my transmission, 4l60e in a 2000 fbody. cant figure how to reach them to break them loose and get them off.

Strahley 04-16-2006 11:09 PM

I don't know if the 4l60e use the same bolts as a t56, but mine ended up using two big extensions and a swivel to remove the top bolts, and to bolt in the top three with the th350. It's gonna be rough, prepare to use a few bad words :)

Npak 04-16-2006 11:13 PM

used the bad words already, just cant get the lift off the extensions on to the bolt on top dead center. ima go buy 2 lonnnng extensions instead of 30 billion short ones.

Make sure the engine tilts back as far as possible. If you have the stock exhaust the pass side cat should be touching the frame.

Npak 04-16-2006 11:38 PM

why the engine tilting back? ill put a jack on front of engine to get it to tilt a bit. the stock exhaust is no more. i got LT headers w/ 3 inch exhaust all the way back. took the exhaust off to do this already.

Strahley 04-16-2006 11:39 PM

The extensions I had were both 3 feet if I recall correctly

with the tranny mount removed the weight of the tranny should tilt the engine enough. Then as your by the tailshaft work your exstensions up to those bolts....when your done getting those off toss them as far as you can!!!!!

for real?
i'm pulling a t-56 off my 99camaro and i can get the upper bolt on driver side but no pass side. did you just use the extensions from the very back of the trans where the driveshaft goes in?

capt.ld 10-10-2009 09:44 AM

i used like 2 or 3 exstentions also and think but they might be diff. sizes up top.its a bitch

z28boy 10-10-2009 10:26 AM

Some people don't put those 2 back in but each to his own. I just pulled my 400 out the other day and I will say this the prothane motor mounts will keep the transmission from tilting back, way better then stock. The trans only moved down maybe a 1/2 inch. I was trying to figure that one out for a little bit lol.

DAS1998 10-10-2009 10:35 AM

put a floor jack with a block of wood under the trans pan. Remove the crossmember and drop it down some. i use a 3/8 to 1/2 36' Extension with 15mm swivel socket. if you dont put those top bolts in you are rollin the dice....

PedaltoMetal 10-10-2009 11:30 AM

Don't know about the ls1's but on my lt1 car I removed the top bolts from under the hood. A flexhead gearwrench made it easy. I know ls1'sl have one missing on the passenger top side but maybe it'll work. Of the two lower bolts on the passenger side the top one was a PITA.

twitchtwice 10-10-2009 11:36 AM

i used about 6 long extension plus a swivel (i think is what its called) and the socket on the end. they are a PITA though.

DAS1998 10-10-2009 11:38 AM

you will have to get creative... remember if this were easy everyone would do it.... good luck.

capt.ld 10-10-2009 01:15 PM

just remember if you never had it out before it will be stuck on the dowl pins.i used a ratchet strap over the rearend and hooked the other end to the tail shaft and cranked it down slow couse its going to pop out hard and fast.so be carefull couse it will be stuck.took me 2 or 3 days to figure it out and i got on here and thats what everybody els has done.works great, dont forget to antiseze the dowl pins to just incase.your good to go then

DAS1998 10-10-2009 01:25 PM

wait untill you get to those torx converter bolts..... damn they can be a pain..

BennyB 10-10-2009 01:31 PM

LOL... ya what hed said... have fun removing the torx bolts to the bellhousing. I had to use a torch and a half inch impact to remove them and still i couldnt get two out so i had to drill them out. Good luck!
