Th400 Won't Go Into Reverse I am having problems getting my TH400 to go into reverse. It acts like it is in neutral instead. This transmission is new and just tried it out for the first time today. Park, 1st, and neutral are ok. Any ideas? |
if it's got a trans brake...u have to put the car in neutral and hit the trans brake button to go into reverse |

in order to engage the reverse ratio in a th400 the valve body must send oil and apply the direct clutch and the rear band.if the vehicle has third gear then it is safe to assume the direct clutch is functional.now if the rear band isnt applying you will have no engine braking in manual low first gear.if there is no engine braking suspect a rear servo stuck or band apply pin length that is too short.what valve body do you have? |
Its a forward pattern manual valve body w/ transbrake. |
generally with a transbrake, you put the shifter selection to reverse, then apply the transbrake. Then the transmission will shift into reverse and you can go backwards :) |
hehehehe, I had to ask the same Question after I installed my TH350 w/ Brake. I bought it used and had no idea ya had to have the Tbrake button pushed. Dont worry man, newb questions are better than ignorant guesses where shit gets broke becuz someone couldnt set the "manhood" aside and ask a question. |
I guess not all of them do that. My Rossler TH400 has a transbrake and I don,t have it hooked up right now (keeps me from being tempted while on the stock 10 bolt) I have all gears and reverse too. I have a reverse manaul valve body though. |
My Th350 is a Rossler RMVB and I have to push the transbrake button for R. Hmmm.. differences in Valve bodies I guess. |
Thanks for your help everyone:) |
my th400 Hey here's a question I have a th400 and when I put it into reverse it try's to drive forward for a few sec. Then nothing no reverse no forward nothing but it drives forward great |
the 400 uses the high clutches and low band for reverse. drive it to see if you have third gear. if it does pull it into low to see if the band applies. might take a second or two. |
Turbo 400 3l80 lost reverse after spinng out in reverse.

Hey Game ova [QUOTE=Game ova;19825062]Either you cooked the band.... or the direct clutch. Those two are what makes reverse. But by you saying it won't slow compression brake anymore confuses me. ....as I'm not aware of any t brake equipped tranny to compression brake.[/ Hey i ment it use to slow down by itself when id let of the gas, now i have to use the brake to slow it down alittle bit before stopping all the way. |
