Synthetic ATF?

Are there any posts on Synthetic Mobile One ATF in place of Dexron? I was at the local Autozone and read the bottle and it says can be used in its place. What do you think about full synthetic. The motor oil is supposed to resist thermal breakdown much better. Would this be true for the Synthetic ATF also? I did read the post on the Dexron VI, is that synthetic?

I use Royal Purple MAX ATF....good results.

I think RP is the only synthetic that works good in these trannys, others seem allow too much slip.

Jpr5690 06-11-2006 08:55 PM

form everyone ive spoke with they always said NO!!!

ping2day 06-11-2006 08:59 PM

Thanks, maybe i will try the Royal Purple. I was worried about to much slippage with the synthetic. What is the Dex VI people are talking about on here that is supposed to keep the tranny cooler?

Royal Purple ATF

I bought Royal Purple gear lube from Thunder Racing, i will check to see if they carry Trans Fluid also. I checked and they do list the RP synthetic ATF also.

Automatic trans fluid?

C5XTASY 06-12-2006 07:50 AM

Yank told me a resounding "NO" when I asked them about using a synthetic. Something about it being too slippery and burning out the bands/clutches (don't remember exactly) earlier in life. They told me to only use Dexron.

OH, i have better research this some more as i am putting my converter in this week. Thankyou for the information

gman 06-12-2006 08:32 AM

I recently just purchased a fully built 4l60e and my tranny builder specifically told me not to use synthetic fluid. He said it would cause problems with the bands and clutches and he wouldn't warrantee the tranny if synthetic was used.

ping2day 06-12-2006 09:15 AM

It is beginning to sound like sythetic is a bad idea. I'm glad i checked hear before i purchased.

SDB 06-12-2006 09:37 AM

Of all the synthetic fluids available, the consensus is that Royal Purple is the only one that tranny experts agree on....but MANY builder still prefer plain ol' ATF over synthetic, even Royal Purple. I like RP because it handles heat better, and I can go a whole season before changing fluid.

ping2day 06-12-2006 11:11 AM

So you ran RP without any slipping issues? I was thinking the same about the heat resistance properties.

Mike2kZ 06-12-2006 12:04 PM

What about Amsoil ATF. I've heard good things about it aswell.

dedge 06-12-2006 01:04 PM

My car just went to the tranny shop with 2nd gear fried. I put (the damn expensive) purple ATF in mine when I put in the stall and it has been slipping ever since. I wouldn't put ANYTHING in it after this rebuild but dextron. Learn from my mistake its an expensive one.

ping2day 06-12-2006 01:28 PM

Thanks for the warning. Does anybody know about the Dextron VI some people are talking about on here? It is supposed to take the place of Dextron III?

spy2520 06-12-2006 01:38 PM

i think dexron 6 has already taken the place of dexron 3 at the dealers, in fact i think they have had just about ever number, IV, V, and now VI...

05gto60 06-12-2006 09:37 PM

you should be fine with the mobil 1 synthetic ATF. one of my guys at work uses that stuff religiously in his cars and has never had a problem. i guess hes drained as much out as he could by droping the pan and removing the bolt on the converter (yes fords have them) and filled them with mobil 1 syn ATF and nothing bad has come of it. one car had 60 some thousand miles when he drained it and put it in, and other was brand new, and both have PLENTY of miles on them now

i dont think mobil 1 would give you a problem, i think that RP or trick shift would since those are synthetics that are made to be slick. look at the back of a trick shift bottle and it even says "not to be used on stock transmissions". i cant find that anywhere on my mobil 1 bottles.

i emailed mobil about their syn ATF and this is the answer i got.

Mobil1 ATF will not cause any problems in stock transmissions. Most of the Mobil consumers that utilize the synthetic ATF, use it in stock transmissions.
i have 15 quarts here and am gonna flush and fill the trans when i can. if i didnt have some problems before with my converter i probably wouldnt be doing a full flush and fill, but i want to make sure the aluminum is out of the trans. im also planning on flushing my power steering fluid and putting the rest of my syn ATF in there too

ping2day 06-12-2006 09:41 PM

Thanks for all the information. I think i'm afraid to try the synthetic now. I will probobly fill my converter with Dextron VI when i install it and dump and fill the tranny with the same.

TCI has a racing fluid that is supposed to have foam inhibiters and a bunch of other fancy stuff in it. I've had good luck with it.

DeltaT 06-15-2006 10:07 PM

Redline Oil has an entire lineup of synthetic ATF here:

http://www.redlineoil.com/products_g...59&subcatID=19

I used Redline Hi-Temp Synthetic ATF in my built 4L60, and now since my built 4L80E calls for a Type F fluid, I'm using the Redline Racing ATF. Working great and my tranny temps dropped 20 degrees.

well, ill let you all know tomorrow IF my trans start slipping cause im going to flush it and put nothing but mobil 1 in. im also gonna take care of my power steering fluid while i have 900 bottles of the syn ATF

Woody73z 06-20-2006 01:31 PM

Has anyone tried B&M Trick Shift??????

05gto60 06-20-2006 06:10 PM

no, but ive had no slippage yet with a full flush and fill of mobil 1 ATF. its only been 3 days and a few hundred miles, but i dont think im gonna get any

DeltaT 06-21-2006 03:13 AM

I've heard that B&M Trick Shift is simply Type F fluid. Their description of the effects seems to match as well.

Transking told me to use Mobile 1 Synthetic in my Transking th400, they love this stuff.

05gto60 06-21-2006 07:48 AM

STH LRD 06-21-2006 08:22 AM

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~Stay as far away from that shit as possible. When I was younger I tried it in my 454 SS Monte Carlo w/a turbo hydro 400 . I had just bought the car new in 1970 , probably had less than 20,000 miles on it. It ruined the tranny in a matter of weeks . Fortunately I had a friend who worked at the local Chevy dealership and they replaced it under warranty. Once is enough for me. Screw me once shame on B & M cause they ain't gonna get another chance ! In this world you pays your money and takes your chances .Like ole W.C. That was also 36 years ago.
I run B+M Trick Shift in my TH400 race trans, Never had a problem and the trans was rebuilt last winter and there was nothing wrong with it.
