Is there a bearing in the tailshaft of a 4L60E????
I was wondering b/c there seems to be a roar comming from the transmission or maybe the driveline. It sounds like a bearing roar. If there is one how would I change it? Just pull the rear of the tranny off? I don't know too much about these trannies so kinda fill me in on if there is anything in the tailshaft that I need to be aware of it I pull it down.

yes, there's a bearing and a seal in the tail housing. I don't know what's involved in changing but I don't think it's a big deal.

Hmm I don't know what you guys are talking about, there's no bearing in the tailshaft.
I broke my tailshaft and had to replace it. The only thing in the tailshaft is: rubber seal so that you don't leak fluid and the VSS (on the side of the housing). The output shaft from the tranny itself sticks through it and the seal, but doesn't actually touch anything. The seal touches the slip yoke of the driveshaft, that's it.
There are bearings inside the tranny case itself, but not the tailshaft.

Yeah what he said. I have a trans apart and see no bearing in the extension housing. It's a waste of time for you to even unbolt it. There is nothing there. I wouldn't touch the transmission unless you know what you're doing.
And yes it is very involved. Just the tools to take it apart will cost you more then a rebuild.

Actually....the tail shaft has a bushing and a seal. There are NO bearings (cup/cone style) bearing in the entire trans. The only "bearings" inside the tranny are "thrust" types i.e. flat needle style. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Yes you are correct, bearing is the wrong word, bushing is the right word. There is a bushing in the tail housing.

Ok guys thanks alot. The root of the problem is that my tranny has a slight roar that sounds like a bearing. Maybe it is something internal.
