Default car jolts when shifting from R to D

When I shift from reverse to drive and give it some gas right away, there is a loud clunk(sounds like it's jumping into gear). It doesn't do it if I let the car roll foward first and then give it some gas. Is something wrong? or is it supposed to have about a 5 second delay before shifting into D

sorry if you dont understand what i'm talking about

Yes there is a delay, wait to hit the gas until after it goes into gear or you are doing a mini-neutral drop every time.

ok thats what i thought(i've only done it a couple of times) but the guy that tinted my windows said that when he was pulling it into the garage that it felt like my U joints were going out. but I figured it was just because he hit the gas too hard. just checking. thanks

could be nothing, but the delay into D and delay into R can be a band issue with the tranny as well.
id check the u joints 1st.
good luck.
